Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Crosby.
Hi Karen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2008, I met with a group of Georgetown High School athletes that had a desire to serve others. They wanted to be more than just athletes; they wanted to give back to their community. After meaningful discussions, thoughtful planning, and determining a set of goals…The Locker was established. In the beginning, it was called Eagle Locker and consisted of two shelves stocked with toiletries and school supplies. In a few short years this humble, thoughtful Service Learning organization grew into a relevant and vital part of the Georgetown, Tx community. With the addition of a second high school in town, the name was changed to The Locker. East View High School opened their doors with The Locker as part of their inaugural traditions. The Locker experienced rapid growth. In 2013, the first Board of Directors was appointed. In 2014, The Locker became a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation. The Locker has become a part of the fabric of Georgetown, Tx. It is an integral part of the schools and community.
The students are passionate about The Locker. They are eager to talk to students to others schools to help them start a program on their campuses. The Locker has expanded to other schools across the state of Texas. These new chapters are making a difference to their students and communities. We have 21 physical lockers currently with more in the development stages. Each of these programs are coordinated through The Locker Foundation.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The Locker has grown rapidly. Managing the growth has been a challenge at times. Any struggles we have had along the way have just been a way to be creative. We use these opportunities to learn and grow. It is healthy for the students to learn to problem solve and take ownership in the decision making of the organization.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I taught in the Juvenile Justice field for 18 years. I developed a Service Learning model to help at-risk students thrive. I became an expert in the field over time. I specialized in student voice and working with the most at-risk student population.
For several years, I was the Service Learning Co-Ordinator for Georgetown ISD. In this role I was able to bring the Service Learning model to the General population of students. This was very positive for our school district.
I have been very involved in the Georgetown, Texas community for over 38 years. I have served my community in many ways over the years. I am known as a leader in my community and a trusted advocate for children. I am known for my positive personality and cheerful attitude. Others come to me because I am always willing to help.
I think what sets me apart is the ability to find good in others. I have a genuine desire to help others without recognition. I have an abundance of empathy and compassion. I always ty to look deep to find the good qualities in a person.
I am most proud of my family and the life we have made together. Professionally, I am most proud of being a respected member of a wonderful community.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We love collaborating and partnering with others. We have opportunities for volunteering several times throughout the year. Donating financially or with items is a huge help to us. Getting a group or business to do a donation drive to collect items is a great way to partner with us. Supporting the students in their events is meaningful.
