Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Cancino.
Hi Kevin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My team and I are all current students at Texas State University. We are all majoring in Engineering and have a passion for understanding how water works. From Washington state to New York, and even as far as Japan, our members come from all walks of life. We are a diverse team, which allows us to leverage all the skills we have attained through our life experiences and apply them to benefit our organization and community.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
We have achieved every objective we set out to do this last year, but our most challenging was the “adopt-a-spot” program through the City of San Marcos’ “Keep San Marcos Beautiful” program. To be eligible for stewardship/adopting a spot, the organization must show dedication by accruing volunteer hours within the community, i.e., picking up trash and river clean-ups. We now have the hours we need to proceed with this process, and we are waiting for confirmation from the City of San Marcos on which area we can take responsibility for. It was not an easy process for us, but we are proud to be able to serve our community by assuming stewardship and maintaining an area of town, ensuring that it stays clean. This is especially important in a city like San Marcos, where the river and ecotourism play a vital role.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the President of the Texas State University chapter of the Texas American Water Works Association. We specialize in water utilities, which go hand in hand with water resources. Since we are a University chapter, we aim to raise awareness in all aspects of water as it relates to water utilities. We love to serve the community through volunteer events. We also strive to enhance the professional development of our undergraduate and postgraduate student members by providing opportunities to expand their knowledge about the water industry and by building connections through networking. This helps our student members build essential professional skills for water industry work.
What do you think about happiness?
Volunteering/serving the community makes us happy because it feels good to be selfless and to do things that benefit the community.
