Today we’d like to introduce you to Kieran Reeves.
Kieran, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Im an Englishman from Surrey, South West of London, UK. I was a SCUBA instructor for 8 years and learned photography underwater. While living on the island of Roatan, Honduras, I met my now wife who is from Austin and a UT graduate. When we ‘retired’ from Scuba diving we flipped a coin as to whether to move to the UK or US. I spent a year in the UK waiting for my K1 fiancee visa and once that came through arrived here in Austin in August 2019 and we got married shortly after.
We have a friend who is a home builder and another who is a realtor so I started making photos of their projects and listings and before I knew it I was a real estate photographer. Though after I had my first shoot for an interior designer I quickly realized thats the kind of photography I wanted to pursue. In 2022 I began chasing interior designers and architects as clients instead of agents and my career has taken off.
I much prefer the slower pace and more artistic approach required for interior design and architecture photography. Collaborating with clients, photo stylists and creative directors is a true joy. My favorite part of making any photo is playing with light, I’m very often using big diffusion sheets (scrims) and putting large off camera flashes outside of a given room to push extra light in to make that soft ‘editorial’ look.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was a steep learning curve going from underwater photography to where I am now, my couple of years shooting real estate making thousands of photos was a right of passage. Ive been very fortunate to have met and learned from some amazing photographers such as, Stephen Karlisch (who has an amazing lighting workshop), Bess Friday and Frank Garnica.
Work life balance has been tough as we’ve also started a family, we now have a 4 year old and a 1 year old. Other entrepreneurs I’m sure know how much work it is and how many hats you have to wear running your own business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Im an Interiors and Architecture photographer, which basically means I shoot for their portfolios and for publication. Quite a different discipline from Real Estate Photography where you shoot for the sale of the home.
While I will make around 25 photos in a day a real estate photographer would maybe shoot 3-4 entire properties in 1 day.
Im working on setting myself apart from other photographers with my lighting style, soft directional light showcasing the shapes from and texture in a given space. While I often lean on artificial/strobe light I very much try and keep it true to the intended mood of the space. Enhancing the look of the space but not distracting from it.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love working with Designers, Architects, Photo Stylists, and other business such as restaurants and hotels. Hit me up through the contact form on my website or on instagram for a collab.
