Conversations with Liam Kelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liam Kelly

Hi Liam, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born in Brooklyn NY and raised in a shore-town in NJ I found the latter half of my adolescence being poked and prodded with the idea of music creation/production. Being just out of high school, in the year 2016, I was not only surrounded by an ample amount of amazing music for the time, but I was truly on my own in the world. I spent the next 3 years working small jobs but most importantly dialing in on the basics of music theory, production, and essentially what “my sound” could potentially be and once I got the basics down I told myself its time to take it to the next level.

Come 2019 I am found enrolling into Full Sail University’s recording arts degree. This is where I will also meet my partner (current). Full Sail University is definitely the peak of a media, technology & art based university which it shows through its students, an international crowd of engineers, producers, artists and entrepreneurs. After finishing my time in Orlando and receiving my bachelors degree I knew I had to take my accumulated knowledge and experience somewhere even better. Being my partner grew up just North of Austin, Texas it begged the question, do I move from Orlando back home to the NE, or do I take my chance and send it west to one of the most notable American cities in the midwest? With help from not only my partner but my Full Sail counselors it was apparent that I move west to Austin.

As of November 2021 I have resided in the east side of Austin working building sound libraries for local audio designers/engineers whilst working with local artists on genres such as Shoe-gaze and House music. Some artists I currently collaborate with with are Jordan Boudreau a graphic designer/UI+UX specialist originating out of Los Angeles, California and Gabriel Santiago a videographer turned House DJ hailing from Houston, Texas.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been an ultimately smooth road, Austin is a city of opportunity and it applies to the people too. Everyone is so ambitious and focused on what they wanna do and who they wanna be so there are a lot of chances for work here. I would say the most difficult part of the road right now is establishing not only returning customers on my end but also searching for a company to work for that will supply longevity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as an audio engineer!

A title I am known for right now is “MÖNX” for my music production. What I specialize in is producing/mixing music, sfx, and soundtracks. With other specialties being scoring for video games & movies. I currently do not have credits under any certain video game or movie but the process is I rework video clips from the ground up (no audio) to showcase my abilities. What I am known for is my music production, my sound design, and my scoring.

I am currently most proud of my sfx/score rework of a clip from the 2007 movie animation “Halo Legends”. You can find it @lliamkelllyy on Instagram. It is a culmination of not only my love for the Halo saga but for my work as well in audio. It was incredibly entertaining to work on from the ground up and I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I did putting it together!

As for what sets me apart from the crowd right now is my music production. I come with a conglomerate of different elements from around the world that make up my music production. Taking notes from European and Latin American music to places even as far as the African plate but all of that is nothing without a disciplined style of workflow. In today’s age we, fortunately, have a lot of resources at our disposal and its good, but to a degree. Something that is key to me is working within the resources you have. You learn more about how you work with yourself and how you can work finite resources in a jiff.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
CONSISTENCY!

It is no joke, gimmick, or trend, consistency is key! Thats on every level too. I view it as if you want the higher rings of life to turn with you you must stay consistent at the core and momentum will move everything forward.

A good example was at the end of 2022 I had the chance to view Europe for the first time. My day job at the time was that of a warehouse employee and my employer was not going to let me leave for that long and put me back on schedule so I had to part ways before I went to Europe. When I got back I immediately saw the time on my hands and kicked it back into being a sponge. Seeking new methods, technology, and engineers to take inspiration from for the entirety of 2023. The time spent learning deeper about foley, the plethora of sub-genres house music supplies, orchestral arrangement, sound selection, and scoring dramatic works of cinema has not only benefitted me across the board but has brought closer with the artists I keep around me and work with. Incredibly enlightening and humbling in the same breath.

The message I’m trying convey is keep consistent in whatever you do, you’ll never know how much it will benefit you until you do it.
