Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Moore.
Hi Lisa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am lucky enough to have had the time to enjoy every season of my life. My degree is in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas. After graduation, I worked at TxDot before my kids were born. With my first son, I became a full time mom. Two more boys followed, and while raising them, I was a school and church volunteer. All three sons have left the nest now. While planning and preparing for the rehearsal dinners for their weddings, I discovered the joy in floral design. I knew my next season of life had begun. I took all the floral design classes at Austin Community College, contacted some local florists about contract work to get some real experience, and eventually started my own company Lisa Jayne Florals.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been mostly smooth. I have made some mistakes along the way, like the time I used light-weight vases at an outdoor wedding and they kept blowing over in the strong wind. I learned to get museum putty to hold things down. I’ve also had to be creative in delivering a certain look a wedding couple really wants, but that isn’t in their budget. I’ll use fewer of the bold, expensive flowers, and get more affordable ones to fill in the background. Flowers are a natural product, so specific availability can be constrained by the growing season, weather, shipping logistics, etc. I’ve learned to include in every contract that I’ll do my best to provide the florals the customer wants, at their price point, but some things are out of my control. Also, since I don’t have much patience for the tax and regulatory aspects of running a small business, my husband, thankfully, helps with that so I can focus on the creative part.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve always been a creative person doing crafts and writing stories, but, as an engineer, I’m also logical. I know the importance of staying within a budget. Lisa Jayne Florals is known for delivering floral designs that are beautiful, but that are also affordable. I’ll source my flowers from multiple suppliers in order to get the best price. I’ll use any existing vases a customer has, if that is what they want. I’ll even help them shop at thrift stores to find unique items that are ready for a new life. If a couple wants to keep prices down for their wedding, and provide the flowers themselves, I can be an extra helper to pull it all together when they get busy on the actual wedding day. I can problem solve to help the customer get as close as possible to what they really want in their florals.
What makes you happy?
Besides having my happy and healthy family, of course, I love to travel. I like to experience new situations, places, foods, and different people. When one trip is over, I have to start planning another one.
