Conversations with Liz Lopez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Lopez

Hi Liz, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my photography business during the pandemic while working as a lead at HEB. With a 6-month-old son at home, I decided to take a leave during the pandemic. Since everything was closed down we would go on a lot of walks. That’s when I picked up my camera to document our adventures. What started as a way to preserve precious moments for myself grew into a passion for photography. I decided to go all out and learn everything I could, purchasing courses and seeking out mentorships from experienced photographers. Like many others just starting out, I took on any session that came my way from cake smashes to weddings. About three years ago, a client asked me to capture her college grad photos and I instantly fell in love with it. There’s something so special about the excitement and joy these grads have for their future—it’s contagious. I still take a variety of sessions but my main focus is college grad portraits.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. I eventually went back to work full time at HEB while continuing to build my photography business on the side. Balancing a full-time job, trying to grow my business, and being a present mom was overwhelming at times. Like many moms, I often felt guilty whenever I had to leave my son, and there were the financial challenges of investing in equipment and courses to get the business off the ground. Through it all, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have an amazing husband who always believed in me and encouraged me to keep pushing forward. His support has been a driving force in helping me stay focused on my dreams.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in senior and graduation photography, and as I mentioned earlier, I truly fell in love with the energy and excitement of college graduates. My goal is always to help my clients feel their absolute best during their session—if I can help them set aside any insecurities, even just for a moment, then I’ve done my job right. I’m also known for working with sorority organizations at Texas State and UT Austin to capture beautiful photos of their executive boards. I understand the budget constraints that come with planning for the year, so I offer these services at a fraction of the cost to help these amazing groups get the photos they deserve.

Something that sets me apart is that I love offering discounted mini sessions once or twice a year. While this may not be the norm in the industry, I truly believe everyone should have the opportunity to capture beautiful family moments. These sessions are typically very affordable. It’s my small way of giving back and making sure that families who might not have the budget for professional photos still have the chance to create lasting memories.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I truly believe in taking risks, especially when it comes to following your dreams. Starting my photography business was a huge risk, and let’s be honest, “starving artist,” is a term for a reason! But in order to pursue what you’re passionate about, you have to take that leap. It’s not always easy, but if you have a strong support system behind you, that makes all the difference. My husband was constantly encouraging me to keep going even when things got tough. Having that support is key to pushing forward even when things seem hard.
