Conversations with Luisa Duarte

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luisa Duarte.

Hi Luisa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I never imagined I’d become a tattoo artist. I grew up loving to draw, but it wasn’t until high school, when I took daily art classes, that I reconnected with it. Though I admired tattoos, I wasn’t raised around them, and getting my first tiny ones at 15 only deepened my interest.

After high school, I explored other career paths, including esthetics and dental assisting, but nothing truly felt right. During this time, I kept getting tattoos—many from Karla, a talented artist I admired deeply. Her work inspired me, and in May 2024, I finally asked if she’d ever consider teaching someone. She was hesitant at first, but she encouraged me to keep drawing and prove my commitment.

I kept practicing and eventually bought my first tattoo machine. Despite setbacks, including job loss and personal struggles, I stayed focused. By October 2024, Karla saw my dedication and agreed to mentor me. I started training with her in November, practicing basic shapes and learning everything from scratch.

In January 2025, I did my first tattoo on real skin, followed by two more in the same month. I launched my tattoo page, Ink du Arte, and began building my portfolio. Today, I’m proud to work as a fine-line tattoo artist under Karla’s (Pink for the Soul) guidance. I’m still learning every day and working toward my dream of owning my own studio.

I know this is just the beginning, and there are many big things ahead. Every step has taught me something valuable, and for the first time, I feel confident and ready to take it all in. I’m committed to becoming a great artist—and I’m excited for everything that’s to come.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road, sometimes life gets in the way of our plans, but everything has a purpose in life. Along this road I learned that what comes easy doesn’t stay, and that you have to work hard and get over every obstacle to get where you want, life is about failing, learning, and being better every day.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Tattoo Artist specializing in Fine Line work. My style is delicate, detailed, and often inspired by spiritual and nature-based elements. I’m known for creating meaningful, custom pieces that tell a story and reflect each client’s individuality. What sets me apart is my focus on intentional design and my ability to create a calm, welcoming space where clients feel seen and heard. I’m most proud of building a connection with each person I tattoo, I believe more than visual, my art is emotional and personal.
