Conversations with Mac Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mac Johnson.

Hi Mac, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When we were 15 my two friends and I had a band called The Contagious. We had sort of made a name for ourselves in the Houston area, which is where we were from. We were playing all over the place, and lo and behold, when we were 16, we got signed by a major record label. We basically had thought we instantly made it and we were set to become the biggest rock band in the last 10 years haha.

We had a lot of fun recording the songs we currently have out now, filming music videos, and traveling to cool places like NYC, Nashville, and Los Angeles in preparation to release our music, and eventually go out on the road on tour.

Then, after 2 years of waiting to finally get out there and make it happen, we were set to go on a 3-month tour across the U.S. and Canada in March of 2020. I’m sure you can see where this is going.

Plague strikes, and everyone is screwed. Long story short, we ended up getting dropped from our label, and the other two members of the band both quit, leaving me to decide how I wanted to continue forward.

I moved to Austin in 2021 and started the painful process of finding new band members. Luckily, the two guys I have with me now, Seth and Isaac, are some of the coolest dudes I know, and after taking a little while to get back on my feet, we are back in full swing and ready to make it happen again.

We are currently playing in Austin and booking shows all over the state, and we’re confident that with our new songs and show we are going to start making it back to where we were pre-COVID. And, we’re having a super fun time while we’re doing it!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. But I have learned that’s the way it goes with the things you care about the most. It was hard dealing with the fact that we had been dropped from our dream scenario, and it was even harder when my two best friends (who I thought I was going to take the world with) decided they didn’t want to do it anymore. But I found that when things like this happen, it shows you who you really are and what you really want to do with your situation. It also helps prepare you for the bumps that will be coming further down the road, and trust me, and at this point, I know there’s probably going to be more haha.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the songwriter and singer/guitar player in the band. We specialize in creating Junk Rock, which is the best way I know how to describe our genre. I (Mac) am specifically known for being the skinny guy with the big hair whose voice sounds like Jesus and Mariah Carey combined. I’m most proud of our shows, because people always have fun when they come out. I’d say we’re set apart from others because of our songs, and the kind of energy we put out when we play live.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’d say Lady Luck has smiled upon me a lot in the past. Without it, I never would have met my bandmates, and we probably wouldn’t have gotten signed when we were 16 either. Trust me, I’ve been pretty unlucky too, though. That’s just the way it works.
