Today we’d like to introduce you to Maicoll Gomez.
Hi Maicoll, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Our parents sacrificed their successful careers as lawyers and businessmen to bring my siblings and me to the US. When we started our education in the US, our love for swimming paved the way for us to become more resilient and hard-working to achieve our dreams of competing at the Olympics! Our family consists of my older brother Jonathan (now 27), myself (25), and our best and brightest sister, Valentina (now 24). We all swam together for many years with the same goal. Eventually, we all went to different Universities nationwide to continue our student-athlete careers. Ultimately, we all became NCAA Scholar All-America Division 1 swimmer, and our older brother, Jonathan, made it to the Olympics. Today, we are working on making the world better. Jonathan and I are Ivy League Master’s Students at Columbia University, while Valentina, having already obtained her MBA from Tulane University at the age of 22, announced she is running for Missouri Secretary of State. I have held many senior positions at Amazon, Bird, and the Tesla Gigafactory. I am excited to support my younger sister’s mission to become The Next Secretary of State.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
From learning English to leading multi-billion dollar corporations to now running for State Office, our lives have been full of challenges that, in due time, we overcome. Almost every day, we are told that we are “too young” to lead a department, a project, or a campaign, and to all those who have told us this, we have managed to respond to them by surpassing everyone’s expectations. We understand that in every new venture, we are the newcomers that “just got here.” After all, it hasn’t been that long since we learned English and graduated from college, but we always hope that when people see what we have accomplished in a short time, they will trust our work ethic and track record to bring that idea to light.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have held senior positions at Amazon, Bird, and the Tesla Gigafactory. Now, I will venture into helping my sister, Valentina Gomez, become the next Secretary of State. When you come from nothing and your parents are working overtime in a factory so you can study and achieve your dreams of buying your mother a house, and you get it done on September 13, 2018, it gives you a huge sense of confidence that nobody can take away! A key part that works for Valentina and me is that we work exceptionally well under high pressure! We knew the time was ticking when we started college, so we both graduated from our respective universities at 19 to help our parents financially. What sets us apart is that we know we have achieved some of our wildest dreams, such as having cars, houses, dogs, and successful careers, so now we know we can achieve way more! Nietzsche said, “I know of no greater life purpose than to perish in attempting the impossible.” For a 24-year-old Latina American and her faithful brother who have achieved everything they set their mind to, that is the following goal: Valentina Gomez, The Next Missouri Secretary of State.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Valentina and I are ambassadors for Atlantic Counter Trafficking (ACT). An organization led by former Special Operations personnel, military, and Law enforcement to help eradicate Human Trafficking across the United States and, hopefully, the world! Besides this, I have appeared on the news in Spain for having helped save the life of someone with a compound leg fracture after falling. I have also been on the side of life. I was unable to save the life of a navy shipman who drowned at the beach where I was playing soccer with a couple of friends.
