Today we’d like to introduce you to Mechiel Rozas.
Hi Mechiel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
NYOS Charter School—Not Your Ordinary School—is a free, public charter school founded in 1998 by parents who wanted more for their children and their community. What began as a bold idea has grown into a thriving PreK–12 school serving more than 1,800 students.
Our mission is to educate the whole student through a collegial PreK–12 program that challenges every learner with rigorous academics, innovative instruction, and clear expectations for civic engagement.
We hold high expectations for all and emphasize character development through our Lifelong Guidelines and Life Skills. Grounded in academic excellence, integrity, service, perseverance, accountability, respect, and nurturance of the whole person, NYOS empowers students to recognize their personal power, achieve their full potential, and strengthen the community around them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any enduring school system, the journey has not been without challenges. We have experienced growing pains—merging two campuses into one unified community and growing into a robust PreK–12 campus serving students from their earliest years through graduation. We also navigated the disruptions and lasting impacts of COVID, while refining our systems and revisiting our core values as our enrollment doubled.
Each season of challenge required reflection and recalibration. Those experiences strengthened our foundation, clarified our identity, and deepened our commitment to academic excellence and character development. We are stronger, more aligned, and better prepared for the future because of it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have spent more than three decades in public education, serving as a teacher, principal, district director, and superintendent. I currently serve as Superintendent of NYOS, where I have led the system through an expansion, codified instructional and operational systems, realized the TEA Teacher Incentive Allotment for all staff, and guided potentional expansion planning for the future
My career has centered on building strong academic systems—particularly in early childhood and literacy reform. I have led multi-million-dollar literacy initiatives, expanded PreK programming districtwide, and improved student performance across diverse and at-risk populations I am especially known for scaling systems with clarity: increasing enrollment by more than 300% in one charter network while raising achievement in both literacy and mathematics.
What sets me apart is the ability to connect vision to execution. I specialize in governance, change management, bilingual education, and leadership development, always grounded in the belief that academic excellence and character development must go hand in hand. I am most proud of building systems that last—schools and programs that not only improve student outcomes but strengthen communities for generations.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that may surprise people is how much time I spend helping families understand what is actually available to them in public education. Many are unclear about what charter schools are—whether they are free, whether they are public, and how they differ from traditional public or private schools. I often find myself explaining that charter schools are tuition-free public schools, held to state accountability standards, but designed with greater flexibility to innovate.
At NYOS, that flexibility translates into something special. We have become a premier choice in the Austin area for families seeking a world-class education inside a caring, student-centered culture. We maintain small class sizes, implement two-year teacher loops in elementary to deepen relationships and academic continuity, and invest heavily in developing our teachers as true craftspeople of their profession.
We are also proud to be the only Level 4 High Reliability School in Texas—an external validation of the systems, rigor, and culture we have built.
