Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Peña.
Hi Melanie , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey into photography started in 2022 as a hobby. I was simply captivated by the way a camera could capture a moment, telling a story that words alone couldn’t. What began as a personal passion quickly turned into something more, and within just three months, I turned my hobby into a side business. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to share my work with amazing people and grow in this creative field.
In 2023, I was honored to be named Best of Hays County for Photography, an achievement that means the world to me. It’s a reflection of the dedication I pour into each session and the trust that my clients have placed in me. I strive to capture not just pictures, but real moments. Whether that’s a family’s love, a couple’s joy, or a special milestone that deserves to be remembered forever.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been easy. As a mom, wife, full-time student, and now a new puppy owner, I’ve had my hands full. In the beginning, my biggest struggle was finding a healthy work-life balance. I felt like I had to accept every session that came my way because I was just starting out. Three years later, I’ve learned the power of saying “no” and the importance of giving myself time off when needed.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I photograph families, milestone moments, graduations, maternity, newborns, weddings, and events. While I’ve tried narrowing my focus to one specialty, I truly love capturing all of them. I’m especially known for my holiday minis. Families tell me year after year how much they look forward to them. One of my proudest accomplishments was being named Best Photographer in Hays County in 2023. Receiving that honor just one year into my business gave me a tremendous confidence boost and reaffirmed why I love what I do.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m actually a very shy person, and I still get nervous when meeting new clients. During sessions, I often have a million ideas running through my head. So many that sometimes I even forget a pose I planned! But I’ve learned that this nervous energy also pushes me to be creative and attentive, and it’s part of what makes each session unique.
