Today we’d like to introduce you to Mykeala Chowritmootoo.
Hi Mykeala, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I bought a camera seven years ago, shortly after getting into a toxic relationship that left me feeling silenced. I used photography as a form of self-expression so that I had an excuse to get out of the house. I used to do spoken word poetry in college (and shortly after at Spiderhouse), and was used to snapping for people when I liked what I heard so I transitioned that into ‘snapping’ when I liked what I saw (hence my photographer name: SnapsbyaGirl). Now I’ve added videography and 35mm film photography to my wheelhouse of expression.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part my journey was a smooth one. All of my friends and family members were extremely supportive of my art, even trusting me to capture their own special moments. I would say the greatest struggle has been my own self-doubt.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a portrait photographer, specializing in intimate moments. To me, intimate can include a wide range from boudoir to elopements to maternity. I think what I’m known for and what I’m most proud of are one and the same: I capture the subtle beauty and soul of a moment.
How do you think about happiness?
Expressing myself through art authentically, without carrying the weight of external projections of what art should look like. We create and we consume, but imagine if we could fill our hearts with our own sense of sincerity and let that splash onto the hearts of those around us? The world needs more passion.
