Conversations with Natalie Forget

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Forget.

Hi Natalie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Napa, California, but was raised in Austin, where I took a non-traditional path from a young age – drawn more to creation than convention. I was mostly homeschooled and chose to skip the traditional college route, instead diving straight into the workforce as a barista—a role I held for nearly a decade.

My journey into video post-production began unexpectedly last summer when my brother, a talented local videographer, asked if I wanted to learn to edit for him. I poured myself into the process, spending every spare moment learning, exploring, and sharpening my skills through hands-on work. Nine months later, I’m a full-time freelance video editor!

Creativity has always been a core part of who I am, especially when it comes to music. I grew up playing piano, singing, and expressing emotion through writing songs. At nineteen, I joined a southwestern indie band and played local shows, but eventually, I turned inward to focus on my solo work, using raw voice memos as the foundation for my electronic tracks. These days, I produce, sing, and am teaching myself to DJ.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The greatest obstacle I’ve faced has been substance addiction—an inherited shadow that’s affected many in my family. After years of struggle, searching, and trying, I finally found clarity. In June 2024, I stepped fully into sobriety, and everything began to change for the better.

For a long time, I moved through life without a true sense of belonging. But I never gave up on finding connection. This past year, I’ve built a circle of deep, grounding friendships and, after coming out as gay, found unwavering love in my fiancé.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As an artist, under the name Nautia – meaning ‘of the sea’ – I’m an electronic music producer, vocalist, and novice DJ. My ethereal, melancholic tones serve as a portal into emotional depths, flowing through genres like melodic and progressive house, trance, drum and bass, and breakbeat to create a soundscape that drifts between dream and reality.

I’m most known for my original electronic tracks and my features as a vocalist on tracks by other producers.

I’m proud that I am completely self-taught, mostly through experimentation. It’s my favorite way to learn anything, even though it may be harder.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is connection – I have a beautiful fiance, amazing friends, and am close with my family. I cherish those relationships; They make life truly fulfilling. I also love freedom, and above all, freedom of time. I’m grateful to now be able to create my own schedule and follow my internal flow.
