Conversations with Nicholas Cleary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Cleary.

Hi Nicholas, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After film school, myself and Andrew Shanks wanted to make films on our own terms. Fun, short action orientated pieces. To our minds, it was the kind of work that funding bodies weren’t interested in. Daniel Vink quickly joined our crusade and we were off! The Fury Three! Making bold big concept content with little to no money. We focused on video-game themes and ideas to encourage our developing VFX skills. And we knew we could tell tight and strong jokes to an audience we were a part of. Video-game companies began to take notice as we parodied and honored their work. Soon we were finding finance in the name of sponsorship. Our skills were growing as our channel’s work became more popular with industry titans.

After a time, we found the opportunity to create a web-series “Goons INC.” Our format and style implemented over a longer course narrative with character arcs – yes please. With only a handful of cash we made it happen, it’s success on the festival circuit left a mark and soon, we were talking to Google Australia as we were invited into the Skip Ahead initiative. More money for more art. The amazing producer Jodie Kirbride joined us and we got to work on our next web series…

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Few roads are smooth. As a group, we are creatives first, which makes us natural problem solvers. The greatest part about the Fury Fingers Road is that it is always growing and expanding. We have created a large and loyal band of artists who love to work with us. Film people, makeup teams, talented actors, parkour peeps, wrestlers, fight choreographers and more! We are very lucky, and we know how to write for the talent we can access.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We’ve been told the Fury Fingers brand is known for its clever concise gag like story skills. It’s something we have always concentrated on and proud that people recognize. You want something punchy short and dazzling? Get the Fury Fingers crew on board. We are great at pitching our ideas too. Telling a story in person is as important as how it’s told on screen.

What’s next?
After “Love, Guns and Level Ups” we have had a taste for bigger budget filmmaking and doing everything by the book. We want more. We are ready for the next step. Were currently writing longer-form projects and pitching…
