Conversations with Rob Mendez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Mendez.

Hi Rob, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My photography journey began on my iPhone X. I would shoot mostly landscapes and portraits. It’s crazy how such good photos can come from a handheld device. My friends and family were the ones who pushed me into taking my photography to the next level. I purchased my very first DSLR camera in 2018, along with a decent 50mm 1.4 lens. I learned all the fundamentals on YouTube and began practicing with anyone who would let me take their portrait. I developed my editing style, practiced…A LOT, and here I am now nearly 5 years later. It’s been an amazing journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a smooth road for the most part. I would say learning how to pose people has probably been the biggest challenge thus far. Generally speaking tho, photography for me has always been, and will always be a hobby more than anything. Staying true to that has helped make this journey a fun, stress-free experience. Getting to meet new people, families, and making a bit extra on the side is just a bonus which I’m very grateful for.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in travel and lifestyle photography. I love taking on challenges and trying out things I’ve never tried before. Getting out of my comfort zone forces me to think outside the box. Turning vision into reality is something I really enjoy. Many people come to me because they love my moody, dull editing style. That’s something that sets me apart from others. I’m really just proud of how far I’ve come and everything I’ve learned.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Austin. I’ve been living here for more than 25 years. I can’t say I like one particular thing about it. I like everything about it…sorta. I don’t like what it’s turning into. I miss the days when traffic wasn’t terrible.
