Conversations with Sarah Doan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Doan.

Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Sarah, a Vietnamese-American author, illustrator. My art is inspired by awkward encounters, childhood memories, food, and the celebration of cultures. I live in Austin with my partner who inspires many of the smiley faces in my work. (⑅˘͈ ᵕ ˘͈ ). I’m represented by James McGowan at BookEnds Literary Agency.

I’m also an art instructor here in Austin! I love helping others express their individual creativity and putting together workshop ideas.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a roller coaster but I’m glad that I decided to take the leap and pursue art during 2020.

Along the way, I’ve experienced self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and sometimes wondering if I should give up art.

In the end however I think it’s worth it because I’m getting closer to my goals of publishing a children’s book that I both write and illustrate and I love what I’m doing. Community has been a big reason why I’m still creating today. Austin has a great creative community and everyone has been so supportive and willing to help one anothe

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I make children’s picture books and teach art workshops. I love making illustrations related to fantasy and adventure, goofy humor, and multiculturalism. I’m proud of how far I’ve come in my art career and how much I’ve grown along the way. I think my art style showcases playful and funny characters, detailed scenes, and cute faces.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Find a community that will support, inspire, and motivate you to keep going. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, whether be making connections with other artists, going to events by yourself, going directly to a business if they have any opportunity available for you. Most importantly, remember to be kind to yourself.
