Conversations with Seth Buckner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Buckner.

Hi Seth, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I worked for Apple Inc corporate for 13 years. Technical support / computer desk type job.

Meanwhile throughout my career, I was very passionate about and deeply involved in mountain bike trail building outside of work. Trail building inherently involves a lot of operating chainsaws, cutting down trees and dealing with raw wooded vegetation.

Around 2021, I started becoming tired of my career at Apple and contemplating new career opportunities. Then the extreme ice storm of 2021 happened in Austin, and I ended up doing a bunch of emergency storm damage tree work for a particular neighborhood in North west side of town.

From that moment on I knew I wanted to become an arborist, and start my one Tree Company.

Between 2021 and 2023 I worked full time at Apple and steadily did tree work part time out side of work.

My extensive history and experience with mountain bike trail building made me very familiar with operating chainsaws and cutting down trees which made the drastic transition from a cubicle job to tree work very natural.

I left Apple in April of 2023 and started my tree company – Buckner Tree Care. And have continued to learn and grow the business ever since.

Buckner Tree Care has continually been very successful and I look forward to continued growth and serving the people of central Texas.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Leaving corporate comforts and steady never ending 2 week paychecks to work for myself and run an entire business has been full of challenges and lessons.

I personally do everything from managing my entire fleet of equipment, to back end business tasks, bookkeeping, marketing and advertising, customer interactions and sales, taxes, etc. Not to mention the physical challenges of tree work itself. Tree work is not only physically demanding, but also is inherently very dangerous.

But although tree work is very challenging at times, it’s also very rewarding and I personally love what I do. Every day is something new and it never really feels like I’m “at work” while doing it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
mechanize your business as quickly as you can to increase capabilities and production, find good workers and pay them well, and also most importantly – ALWAYS do a great job for each and every one of your customers
