Conversations with Shanik Hughes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanik Hughes

Shanik, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began in entertainment when I was just three years old in Mexico. I started in theater and transitioned into television, appearing in soap operas, commercials, and films. Growing up in a creative environment, I learned early on how much storytelling can impact people. Over the years, I explored various aspects of the entertainment industry, including acting, singing, and live productions.

After working in different markets like LA, Miami, New York, and Mexico City, I moved to Austin, where I fell in love with the city’s vibrant music and arts scene. Austin gave me the opportunity to fully embrace my love for live performances, songwriting, and collaborating with other creatives.

Now, I wear many hats—singer-songwriter, producer, business owner, and teacher. I’ve released my EP, Princesa Rebelde, and continue to work on music videos and performances that tell authentic stories. Recently, I was honored to receive the Live Music Fund grant from the City of Austin, which has allowed me to bring more of my vision to life.

At this stage, I’m focused on using my platform to highlight Latin culture, bring people together through music, and support the next generation of artists by sharing my knowledge and experiences. Every step of my journey, even the challenges, has shaped who I am today, and I’m excited about what’s next.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all—it’s been a road full of challenges and lessons. One of my biggest struggles has been balancing the demands of being a single mom while pursuing my career. My daughter is my top priority, so I’ve had to be very intentional about managing my time and making sure I never compromise the quality of time we spend together.

Another major challenge has been the deep journey of self-exploration and healing. Before I could show up as my authentic self on social media or in my work, I had to confront my vulnerabilities and embrace the truth of my life, even the messy parts. Sharing real-life struggles and showing the imperfect side of the journey has been difficult but also incredibly rewarding—it has allowed me to connect with people on a deeper level.

Adding to this, I’ve had little to no support from my family in pursuing this path. This forced me to rely on my inner strength and resourcefulness, which ultimately shaped me into the person I am today.

Despite these struggles, I wouldn’t trade the journey for anything. Every challenge has pushed me to grow, to stay true to myself, and to focus on the bigger picture: inspiring others, creating art, and building a life that reflects my values and passions.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

I’m a singer-songwriter, content creator, and live performer with a passion for storytelling through music and entertainment. My work spans across different platforms, from live performances and music videos to teaching voice and piano, and even producing events. I specialize in creating meaningful, authentic experiences, whether it’s on stage, in the studio, or connecting with people through social media.

I’m most proud of my EP Princesa Rebelde, which captures a mix of strength and vulnerability. It’s a reflection of my journey—embracing rebellion not as defiance but as a way to carve out your own path. I’m also incredibly honored to have received the Live Music Fund grant from the City of Austin, which has allowed me to further my live performances and engage more with the local community.

What sets me apart is my ability to weave authenticity into everything I do. I’m not afraid to show the highs and lows of life, especially on social media. I think people connect to that honesty—seeing the real, imperfect moments alongside the polished ones.

Another thing that makes me unique is my cultural perspective. As a Mexican American artist, I bring my heritage into my music and performances, which I believe adds a special layer of depth. I’m also dedicated to uplifting the Latin community in Austin and beyond by promoting more representation in the arts.

Ultimately, what drives me is the connection I build with others—whether it’s inspiring someone with my music, teaching them to find their voice, or creating a memorable experience at an event. It’s about making an impact that goes beyond just entertainment.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
:

Some of my favorite childhood memories revolve around traveling with my mom to beautiful destinations like Cancún, Miami and Puerto Vallarta. Those trips were filled with adventure, laughter, and moments that made me fall in love with the vibrancy of life and different cultures.

Another cherished memory is working as a child actress. It was such a unique experience for someone so young—I learned so much about creativity and discipline while having so much fun on set.

I also remember the pure joy of receiving my first French poodle as a gift when I was five years old. He was such a special companion and a source of unconditional love during my childhood.

And, of course, my mom’s music playing almost 24/7 in our home was the soundtrack of my childhood. It shaped my love for music and inspired me to explore it as a career. Our house was always full of energy and creativity, which laid the foundation for everything I do now.
