Hi Sioban “Damalia”, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello , I am Sioban “Damalia “ Majeed originally from Camden , Nj I have been in the San Antonio area for 11 years now . I have been in the cosmetology industry for 30 years . My love for fashion along with a nudge from my grandmother is how I got into the industry. My first love has always been doing editorial and runway , I am also an educator of tight curl and color , founder of texture education platform Texture Prodigy Academy as well as Damalia & Co International Hair Team . I have done pretty much everything within the industry from salon ownership, set work , editorial, educator, runway , music videos and various fashion weeks to include , New York , Philly, Paris and soon Milan fashion weeks. My love of helping women to look and feel there best has always been priority for me especially now as natural hair/coils and curls are now in the forefront of the industry from executive women to magazine covers women are now embracing their hair textures.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road , my road wasn’t easy as I was a teen mom and was told that I was by many that my life was over . But my grandmother and a few others told me to continue to push through and from them I learned that my circumstances does not reflect my outcome.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When I am behind the chair i specialize in tight curl cuts and color , when I’m not behind the chair im doing runway and editorial work which I love as fashion has always been a passion of mine and I get to travel the world doing it . My proudest moment actually was recently as I lead a team of hairstylists from around the United States to Paris for Paris Fashion Week. What sets me apart is that I am versatile, all textures of hair from straight to coily I refuse to put myself in a box , I am a advocate for education for hairstylists to learn and grow in their craft , learning the industry as it can have a long road but it’s up to you as the young stylist to get a mentor and learn everything you can as this industry is always changing .
