Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Villanueva.
Hi Sofia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Mavah Designs was born out of a need for a creative outlet during maternity leave. As a teacher, I was looking for fun, new earrings to wear back to school. After watching a few videos and gathering supplies, I decided to give it a try—and my friends and coworkers absolutely loved the pieces I made! What started as a small project for them has since grown into a full-fledged business, now available online and at local boutiques and markets.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There has been bumps along the road, impostor syndrome is real. I have struggled feeling like my work is not as good as other artists. Especially since I am newish to this, but every time I am feeling discouraged someone comes along the way to remind me of how talented and creative my work is. I am very grateful for all those people who come into my life that appreciate my work and remind me how talented I am.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work with polymer clay and create earrings and other accessories like charms, barrettes, trinket dishes and bookmarks. Polymer clay is such a versatile material to work with, I have fell in love with how many things I can create with this medium. I specialize in designing and creating earrings, from studs to big and bold statement pieces. One of my big inspirations for my designs is my Mexican roots. I try to incorporate the bright and bold colors of my childhood into my designs. Another inspiration for my styles is listening to what my inner child would have liked to wear back in the 90’s. I take a lot of inspiration from that time.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
One of the best things I love about our city is how diverse and creative Austin is. I love how everyone is very supportive of the artisan community. Every time I have a market I am eagerly looking forward to meeting and connecting with new people and obviously seeing some familiar faces. I enjoy every conversation I have with everyone who attends.
