Conversations with Sonali Prabhu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonali Prabhu.

Hi Sonali, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started taking photos in my sorority in college and one of my sorority sisters asked if I’d take her graduation photos. It was my first time charging someone for photos and that’s where I fell in love with taking graduation photos. I moved to Austin in 2019 and I knew that I had to get my name out to college students. I offered free shoots to some college girls and sororities and then it was a domino effect from there. I photograph anything except for weddings, but grad sessions are my favorite!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth ride. I came to Austin with my boyfriend who had just received an offer while I did not have a job at the time. I wanted to see if I could pursue freelance videography & photography so worked my butt off to network around the city and get my name out there. I was still looking for jobs just as a backup and finally got a remote part-time job as a content creator for a corporate Student Housing company. It took about a year & a half to feel like networking paid off with freelance.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in natural light photography so majority of my clients are high school and college graduates and I also do couples, families, events, etc.

I would say I’m known for my edited. I try to stick to bright photos while still keep the true to color look.

I am most proud of where I am with my business. When I moved here, I was nervous to start from square one because I didn’t know anyone here, but now this have given me proof that you can do anything you set your mind to.
