Conversations with Stephanie Guerra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Guerra

Stephanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always loved everything cake related! I use to watch every episode of Cake Boss and Cake Wars, thinking how amazing their cakes were wishing I could do that. Fast forward to 2020 quarantine I was home watching video after video of cakes being made on TikTok. My sister turned 30 that November. At the time the number cakes were trending, and I really wanted to make one for her. So I did and once I was done I just thought it was the cutest cake ever, now looking back I owe my sister another cake because that one was a disaster! But, I really enjoyed decorating the cake and talked with my Husband about how much I loved doing it and maybe I should try to start a home bakery. He told me I should just go for it. I was afraid thinking of what would go wrong I literally had no experience. So I made a Facebook page and started receiving orders here and there from family and friends. I first started off with cupcakes, number cakes and treats. I struggled in the beginning taking any and every order on just to get the experience, it was a bit overwhelming. Now I can say I am finally finding my rhythm in my baking journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning more so, I was taking on a lot more and said yes to orders big or small that I really didn’t enjoy doing. There are so many aspects of baking and desserts I was trying everything, trying to find my niche. But I am grateful for it, it helped me learn what I do and don’t want to offer to clients. Time management was also rough balancing work, cakes and family life I was pulling all nighters more than I can count trying to finish orders that were to be picked up soon. I wanted to throw in the towel plenty of times I felt like if I was giving to much time to one thing I was failing at the other. If I was baking all weekend I didn’t get enough time with my family, or If I put off an order until the last minute to be with my family I’d fail by rushing and the cake not come out to what Id hope for.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a home baker known as Sugar & Spice. I specialize in custom cakes from kids cakes to wedding cakes. Currently the most popular design would be the trending heart cakes. What sets me apart from others I would say is my style, and that I really love the art of cake decorating. I’ve met so many amazing people and love the fact that a client chooses me to be apart of their baby’s first birthday, a college graduation, their best friends bachelorette party or their daughters quinceanera.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Cake decorating is a lot of trial and error, with all of the ideas and inspiration clients come to me with. I’ve really had to teach myself everything that I know. Starting a home bakery was a risk I didn’t know if I would fail, I never imaged I would receive the support that I do. I’ve had offers for employment from other bakeries which is very tempting. I do still have a full time job other than Sugar & Spice and cant wait to be a full time cake decorator but I’m going to be patient and bet on my self and my dreams.
