Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Sharp.
Hi Tim, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Adam and I have been friends for over a decade. We met playing a pickup game of volleyball at Zilker Park and became fast friends. Over the years we became closer as we navigated life’s struggles. In 2017 my father passed away from cancer and two years later Adam lost his mother also to cancer. Having similar experiences losing a parent gave us a level of understanding about each other that solidified our friendship into a brotherhood. Then by 2020 when Covid19 hit we sat down one day and realized that our priorities were changing. We were both in our late 30’s, saddled with debt, and getting tired of working for someone else. We had both worked in the event space for a number of years and together we decided that we could offer events something different. The idea was a customizable photo booth that could be catered to every event. I had gotten married and had a photo booth at my wedding and remembered even though I loved the photos the photo booth took, I had no say in what the photo booth, backdrop, and props looked like at the event. Once we decided on a direction we wanted to go, we spent the next three months pouring through everything we needed to know about the industry and built a business plan. Once the business plan was finished we put it into action and Kona Events ATX was born. Our company name and logo was inspired by my beloved golden retriever, Kona, who passed away in 2021 at 16. Kona treated everyone and everything with love and kindness, which are principals that we do our best to live by and principals that we want Kona Events ATX to reflect in everything we do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No road to starting a business is a straight line and there are challenges that put our dedication to the test every day. When it’s your business everything is on you. The time you put into it is everything, which can be extremely challenging because life around you continues. Juggling your day job, your family, your household, and your bills all while trying to stay focused on your goal is a daily challenge that will test your mental and your resolve. Because once you take out the loan and buy the equipment and build the website, and integrate the software, and lock in the permits, licensing, and insurance necessary to run a business it’s go time. In the beginning, all you have is debt and a hope that all the research you did was enough to make your business a success.
