Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Davis
Hi Amy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Like many others, my priorities shifted during and after Covid. I was working in corporate operations while raising 2 young kids with a husband who traveled frequently for work, and life felt hard and unfulfilling in all the ways. I shifted focus to what brings me joy – gifting – and realized there was a real opportunity to bring intention to each and every package in a way that didn’t currently exist in our Hill Country community. I quit my job, and just like that, CADEAU (the French word for “gift”) was born.
Fast forward a few months, and the first CADEAU candle was poured. The first product of my very own and the result of a passion project I had been wanting to explore for years. After a long road of our kids battling respiratory illnesses as infants, a friend of mine introduced me to the layers of toxicity in fragrances that surround us – in our household products, laundry, and air that we breathe. We became a fragrance-free household for several years, until I found a way to make safe candles myself. Candles that are not full of paraffins, phthalates, carcinogens, and other toxins so commonly found in many of my favorite brands before. Each candle is still developed and hand-poured by me personally, a labor of love that I hold near and dear to my heart.
Now, our gifts are specially curated for individuals and businesses and shipped across the country (and a few internationally). Our candles are burned in many homes and sold and/or gifted by other local businesses. We continue to dream big for all that lies ahead!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I can’t imagine that choosing to leave a career and financial safety net to pursue a dream of entrepreneurship is ever a “smooth” transition for anyone! But, I continue to choose gratitude daily and will never lose sight of the love and support that I have received from so many people along the way.
Every person in any job likely wears multiple hats, but this venture has taught me that wearing ALL of them, at least in the beginning, is not for the faint of heart. On the good days we celebrate. On the tough days, we remember that we are better than yesterday and that every phase is a temporary stepping stone to tomorrow’s potential.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Curating intentional gifts and pouring candles are two very different projects, but fall under the same creative umbrella that allows me to curate an experience for someone else.
Each gift starts with a vision or purpose, is compiled of meaningful elements, and results in a tangible, memorable experience for the recipient. Similarly, scent is an amazing sense that can transform a mood, reignite a memory, and create feelings of comfort, calmness, and warmth… a gift in and of itself.
The belief that gifts should not just be opened, but felt, enjoyed, and remembered, is at the forefront of every project, and in my opinion, truly what sets us apart from a typical gift shop. It’s an art that often gets lost along the way, even unintentionally, due to obligation or convenience that so often surrounds generalized gifting. At CADEAU we aim to remove the burden, hand-select purposeful and unique items, and curate with heart, every single time.
