Daily Inspiration: Meet Asiah Spencer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asiah Spencer.

Hi Asiah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I first learned how to shoot during my sophomore/junior year of high school, around 2016. When the Covid-19 Lockdown started in 2020, I picked it back up as a way to stay busy and make some extra cash. I started shooting street photography, and later moved to shooting friends & local musicians portraits in Austin and Dallas. My background of learning to shoot in Downtown Dallas helped me hone my eye for composition as well as how to play with shadows. Now I use the same techniques in my portraits.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the greatest struggles I’ve had along the way has been staying consistent, and not sitting on my work. As an artist I’ve always strived for my work to be “perfect” subconsciously, despite always doing my best and just wanting to express myself. I’ve always been told, “If you’re gonna do something, do it right the first time so you don’t have to do it again”. Not knowing that maybe my work is just supposed to inspire someone else to create, or just make me feel better emotionally. Art doesn’t have to have an end game or a point, it can just bring you joy – it doesn’t have to feel like an obligation to your audience.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in portraits of up and coming musicians and creatives, highlighting their individuality for their promotional marketing materials. I’m known for capturing their most candid moments during studio sessions, performances, and for album cover photos. Im most proud of my duality in the ability to shoot eye-catching visuals for artist, as well as being able to create shoots with meaningful concepts that are memorable. What sets me apart from others is the balance of shadows and bright colors in my photos, my eye, and adaptability in different environments.

What makes you happy?
What brings me the most joy is being able to inspire others through my art and unique perspective. I hope to motivate others to strive for more and work to better themselves. I know I’m consistently working on being a better person myself, I could only hope it rubs off on someone else, to keep making the world a better place. Another passion of mine is cooking for people I care for, you should never eat alone and I love creating a space for people to feel safe & seen.
