Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Sagay.
Hi Becky, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m Becky Sagay, the owner and creator of dandy hair co. I’ve been a hairstylist for 12 years. However, my hairstyling career started in second grade when I gave everyone haircuts with kitchen scissors in my parent’s basement. After a decade in the industry, I decided to open my hair salon. I yearned to create a unique space that maximizes the client and stylist experience. I poured myself into endless research to become educated on creating a hair salon from the ground up. Six months later, I couldn’t have been prouder to open the doors to dandy hair co, a laidback luxury salon for stylists who want freedom and support. Conceptualizing and building a hair salon for stylists to flourish in their craft has been one of my most incredible adventures.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As expected, there are tons of bumps in the road when starting a business from the ground up. Obtaining dandy hair co’s certificate of occupancy through the city was very challenging and presented a ton of curveballs. But, I’ve learned a lot along the way and will take all of these lessons with me throughout my entrepreneurship journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in dimensional, lived-in hair color and textured haircuts. Each client and their hair is unique, so I love combining different coloring techniques and formulations to create a custom look for each person. I’m lucky enough to have over 200 clients I adore and look forward to seeing each day. As much as I love doing hair, I love catching up and giggling with my clients even more.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I named the salon dandy hair co after some of my favorite childhood memories with my grandfather! Growing up, my grandpa often picked my sister and me up from school to babysit us until our parents were off work. I always knew when it was Grandpa Frank’s day to babysit; I could expect a giant bear hug and a comment about my cute pigtails or a big bow in my hair before he’d tell me I was “nothin’ but a dandy.” When I shared the news of opening my salon and brainstorming a unique business name with my grandpa, he said, “You’ll do great. You’ve always been such a dandy.” I got off the phone with him that day and submitted the paperwork to finalize dandy hair co, and I have never looked back.
