Today we’d like to introduce you to Britten Tedford.
Hi Britten, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for floral design began in high school, where I first got hands-on experience through floriculture competitions with FFA. That early hands-on experience really sparked my interest and set the foundation for my career. After graduating, I moved to Austin, Texas, and was fortunate to land a position at one of the city’s most well-known florists, a shop that’s been a staple in the community for over 50 years.
Over nearly a decade there, I worked my way up, learning every aspect of the business—from design techniques to customer service to the logistics of running a successful floral operation. That experience was invaluable and gave me the confidence and skill set to take the next big step: purchasing my own flower shop in Elgin. It’s been an exciting and rewarding journey, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road definitely hasn’t always been smooth. One of the biggest challenges in this industry is the demanding schedule, especially around major holidays. I’ve had to sacrifice a lot of personal time—missing out on celebrations with family and friends—while working 16+ hour days to meet deadlines. It’s physically intense work, often spent entirely on your feet, sometimes skipping breaks just to ensure every arrangement is finished on time and up to standard.
But despite the long hours and the physical toll, there’s an incredible sense of accomplishment when the rush is over—whether it’s a holiday or a major event—and you can see the impact your work has had. The joy it brings to people makes all the blood, sweat, and tears feel truly worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a floral designer with a specialty in sympathy and funeral arrangements. This area of floral design is deeply meaningful to me, as it allows me to create pieces that honor and reflect the lives of people’s loved ones. I’m known for my bold, unique designs that stand out, while still capturing the sentiment and beauty these moments deserve.
What I’m most proud of is being able to bring comfort to families through thoughtful, personalized floral work during some of their most difficult times. What really sets me apart is my attention to detail and the premium quality flowers I use—it’s important to me that every piece not only looks beautiful but also holds up well and feels intentional in every stem and color choice.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success means being able to do what I love every day. When I’m creating floral designs and connecting with people through my work, I feel fulfilled—that’s how I know I’m on the right path.
