Daily Inspiration: Meet Carey Rouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carey Rouse.

Hi Carey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I played youth sports like most kids. I suppose that’s where I first got the competition bug. I continued to play recreational sports in college but that’s also where I was introduced to weight lifting. And not long after graduating from UT Austin as a Mechanical Engineer, I discovered road cycling. I’ve been able to maintain a great balance of strength training in the gym with cardio training from riding my bike.

Even as I worked full-time in technology and consulting over the past 25 years, I worked part-time as a personal trainer. I’ve worked as a trainer in several local gyms, ran another fitness company for a while, designed wellness programs for businesses, and led boot camps for other companies here in Austin. I devoted all my spare time to fitness through training others, getting certified as a personal trainer, competing in bodybuilding, and staying active on my bike.

After 25 years of doing what I loved part-time, I finally realized I needed to make fitness (my passion) my full-time goal, which is why I started Rouse Fit. My days of managing technology projects are over.

I turned 50 this year which was huge…and I couldn’t be more excited about it. I’m in the best shape of my life.

I specialize in clients who are 40+ to get them in the best shape of their lives. I’ve been there. I’ve done that. I’ve learned from my mistakes, my injuries, my training, and all of my real-world experiences. I walk the walk, not just talk the talk and I love helping others.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
So, I’m not a 22-year-old indestructible trainer. I’m a 50-year-old trainer with my fair share of injuries along the way. I understand how to help people stay in shape while still avoiding injuries. I’ve had knee and shoulder surgeries. I’ve also had congestive heart failure from a virus attacking my heart. But all of these things can be overcome and there’s a path forward for everyone.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I can do the full gamut of personal training services from in-person training to virtual training and I also help with lifestyle choices and meal plans. Although, I would estimate that 90% of my business is virtual. But I specialize in working with clients who are 40+ years old and want to get in great shape.

In addition to creating custom workout plans, I also have a secret weapon. I’ve developed my own tool for creating custom meal plans for all my clients. I ask a few questions from a survey and I can create a completely custom meal plan. The plan is super simple, yet comprehensive. I tell them exactly what to buy, how to prepare the food, what goes into each meal, and the quantity/weight of each ingredient. I lay out exactly what a given day of eating would look like. I then meet with my clients weekly to check on their progress and I make any necessary adjustments for the next week.

As I’ve learned, 80% of the effort with getting into shape and staying in shape is what you eat (or what you should not eat). But most advice on food is too vague or too complicated. My plans are specific and simple.

I think the thing that sets me apart from others is that I practice what I preach and I’m a living example of the methods and tools that I share with others. If you are 40+, do you really want to take advice from someone in their 20s who hasn’t walked in your shoes or who doesn’t understand your needs?

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Consistency is THE number 1 factor in determining if you’ll be successful. I recently wrote a blog about it. The link is here but I’ll summarize it below. https://rousefit.com/four-secrets-to-achieve-consistency/

Four Secrets To Achieve Consistency
Systems – Substitutions – Support – Simplification

Systems are processes or tools that can help organize and streamline your efforts. They provide a structure you can work within that becomes a foundation for your movements, timing, tracking, and actions in a way that encourages repetition.

Substitutions are mini-cheats that can allow you to be 95% aligned with your fitness goals without having to give up 100% of what you love or without forcing you to endure 100% of what you can’t tolerate.

Support from your social circle and your environment is incredibly important. We all need others who are pulling for us, pushing us, showing us, or leading us to success.

Simple and consistent beats complicated and inconsistent every day. People overcomplicate things, making them harder to do, harder to remember, and more time-consuming.
