Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Conde.
Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started seriously pursuing hip-hop when I first moved to Austin in 2007. Over the years, I cultivated my craft, found my voice and point of view, which I’ve found important especially as there are few of us queer-identifying rappers. In the last five years, I’ve managed to grow a following by touring and opening for acts like Big Freedia. Today, my goal is to continue to produce art and get on stage as often as possible to showcase it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of the biggest hurdles have been overcoming drug addiction and alcoholism, which caused me to be homeless on and off over the years. I also had to battle my own internalized homophobia, which also contributed to my addiction issues. Today I have over seven years of sobriety and have learned to love facets of my identity
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a hip-hop artist. I specialize in rapping. I’m known for rapping about overcoming internalized homophobia and overcoming addiction. I’m most proud of being able to create art out of these hardships. My skillset sets me apart from others.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
My overarching message is essentially to encourage others to be their authentic selves. Through my music, I hope to encourage and inspire my listeners to love themselves and each other while also vibing to the music
