Daily Inspiration: Meet Derek Lively

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Lively.

Hi Derek, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a problem child and got into a lot of trouble. I got shot 4 times and went to prison. I overdosed on drugs 12 times. I finally got sober after one last scare and then went to rehab. I came out and became obsessed with personal development. I started a meditation group in the grass that quickly erupted into a vibrant community. Investors eventually recognized me, and I now own a studio called Flowmagin. I am involved with a powerful network of people seeking to change the world through community and personal growth! I very soon realized I needed to cut everyone from my past out of my life, so I did, and it was the best thing I could’ve ever done.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
I struggled a lot because I quit my job without a plan in my heart. I knew I had to go all in and figure out a way to live my newfound purpose while also being able to support myself. It wasn’t easy, but the way appeared before me as I continued moving in the direction of my dreams. Someone once told me, “The path weaves itself as you walk it,” That is the truth. Another inspirational quote I saw when quitting my job was from Terrence McKenna, “this is how magic is done. To hurl yourself into the abyss, only to realize it’s a featherbed.” Now I wouldn’t say it was at first a featherbed by any means; a lot of fears came up, negative self-talk, just overall doubts, and there were many months where it seemed like just in the nick of time, some money came through all though I always thought that was interesting. At the last minute, everything always worked out. I went from being a random guy inviting people to a meditation group in the grass to having an entire community of over 4,000 people-where a year later. We ran several weekly events consistently, as well as special pop-up ones a couple of times a month, and now, I’m a studio owner. It has not been an easy journey, but it’s been worth it. It’s still not easy, but it’s still a thousand times worth it. I wouldn’t have it any other way. So, I encourage everyone to dive in first and burn the boats. There will always be another “job.” Now is the time to chase your dreams. Right now.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I own a studio called Flowmagin. The idea for it is wellness meets art and play. It’s a very cool studio. Unique. It feels like an underground multi-colored playhouse for adults. Not like any other wellness studio you have been to. I also run my events. I’m a certified breathwork practitioner, and I host events every couple of weeks where generally 80+ people attend, and I give it away for just $10 a person; most things like this cost about $70 a person. I do it because I want to give back to the community for giving so much to me. I want to be a full-on public speaker eventually. My goal is to get accepted to do a TedTalk before 2024 begins. I want to inspire people to follow their hearts in all ways and not let fear rule them or hold them back. Let’s not get it confused; fear is the only thing that hinders our true potential; without it, we would be the person we have always dreamed we could be. The funny thing is that all we have to do is move through life with radical courage, which only takes one decision. You make one decision and become the person you have always wanted to be. I want to inspire people to make that decision.

Are any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Conversations with God changed my life. It gave me a very refreshing perspective on Love vs. Fear. It helped me see that I create my reality. So, I created my reality, lol. The Gene Keys book also was very impactful for me. It is a specialized spiritual blueprint for your life and your purpose. It is catered specifically to you, so it unlocks all types of wisdom for you, but it also has many universal truths that are mind-blowing.
