Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Higgins.
Hi Destiny, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always been interested in makeup but could not afford to buy it in high school, so when I got to college and started working more hours, I could buy whatever makeup I wanted. My friends and family noticed how good I was getting at it, and they often wanted me to do their makeup. I had a friend get engaged, and she asked me to do the makeup for the wedding. I declined and told her it would be better to find someone more experienced, but she insisted. She gave me 2 years’ notice, so I had time to get better and build a kit to prepare for the wedding. After working the wedding, realizing how good of a job I did, and spending hundreds of dollars on the kit, I thought I’d give makeup artistry a shot. I was ready to quit after my first two weddings in the industry. I couldn’t understand why my clients did not look like Kim Kardashian on the cover of Vogue. I was always wondering what I was missing. As I worked with more clients, I started realizing how good I was and that Kim Kardashian’s posts on Instagram were not an accurate depiction of Mario’s work. I am finally to the point where I trust my craft. There is always room to grow, but I’m confident.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road. I remember crying after someone asked me for birthday makeup for her and 5 friends. This was before I had a kit, so I went to Ulta and bought over $200 worth of products. A few days later, the person called and canceled, and I was so sad. My boyfriend saw how upset I was and told me that one day I’ll be hoping that someone cancels because I will be so tired from working on my other clients. Well, that day is finally here! (haha) I still have moments of feeling like I am not good enough. I overly criticize my work. I used to look at pictures hundreds of times, even after posting, and pick myself apart until I deleted it. I still do it sometimes, but now I am more confident in my work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I am a makeup artist. I own FacexDestiny, and I specialize in all things GLAM. I love doing makeup. I have the same love for a glam session as I do for wedding makeup. However, there is nothing like seeing the look on a bride’s face after revealing her bridal glam. I think I am most proud of my growth as an artist. What sets me apart is that I am good at what I do, even though I am less seasoned than other artists. I have been a makeup artist for going on 4 years. I have never worked for a major makeup retailer and did not go to school for it. I am self-taught, and everything I have learned has come from YouTube and trial and error. I am lucky to have some great friends in the industry who don’t mind helping me learn new tips and tricks. I am also constantly trying to learn new things. I practice on people every chance I get, which helps me grow and become a better artist.
What makes you happy?
What makes me the happiest is my son, Christian. He is 9 months old and gives me the drive to keep pushing. Everything I do is for him. I want him to know that Mommy worked hard to provide him with the best life.
