Today we’d like to introduce you to Dharam Khalsa.
Hi Dharam, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born and raised as a Sikh in Austin Texas, living abroad in an Indian boarding school in my youth, and in NYC as a young adult while pursuing a professional skateboarding career.
After sustaining a life-altering injury a few years ago, I had the good fortune of being given a camera. All of my time and energy spent pursuing a skateboarding career is now filled with this new gift. Inspiring me to shift my perspective on life, literally and figuratively, through the lens of my camera.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overcoming my injury has been extremely difficult, making life all the much more difficult but the support shown to me on account of my photography has been extremely positive and I have had incredible amounts of help along the way, the help and enthusiasm surrounding my work has been immensely inspirational to me and motivates me to overcome any obstacles in my way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I focus on both documentary and manipulated content, with emphasis on portrait, landscape, and skate motifs.
I recently graduated with a double major in Fine Art and Editorial Photojournalism with a minor in editing from the Department of Professional Photography. I work with both digital and film media, using Nikon, Mamiya, and Yashica cameras.
I think what sets me apart from others, if anything, is my desire to make the uninteresting look interesting, to find the overlooked and attempt to express its value in a capacity that can be shared with others. inspiring them to look a little deeper, and feel a little more than they may have anticipated.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
To look deeper, look beyond the obvious surface.
