Today we’d like to introduce you to Fabian Puente. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Fabian hails from South Texas and moved to Austin in 2006 to begin his journey of becoming a comic book Artist. Still, he quickly discovered Austin Community College had an Animation program. While attending ACC, his 2D animation professor at his studio offered him an internship, which turned into a full-time gig. It was a small operation with 5 employees, with the fifth member being the coffee maker. Unfortunately, after 3 years of working there, the studio went under, and Fabian needed a job. Another 2 years later, he would find employment again in the Animation Industry. However, he was pretty rusty, so the job lasted only briefly. Now, feeling insecure about his Animation skills, he decided to return to his first love (Illustration.) In the following years, he worked as a contractor and freelancer and eventually became a full-time Illustrator in food safety. Even with full-time employment, Fabian finds time to focus on his art. He started sharing his work on Instagram, where he garnered a small following of people interested in purchasing his work. A year later, he was invited to attend a pop-up market event and fell in love with the idea that he could offer his art at a reasonable price and connect with people directly ever since he’s now been vending at market events whenever he gets a chance.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges is getting into some of these markets because this city is saturated with many talented Artists. Other than that, when I get into these events, people have been kind and receptive to my art, which feels nice.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The work that I’m known for would be my monolithic illustrative works. I’m in love with the idea of the Great Pyramid of Giza. It’s a huge structure, and I’m fascinated by the idea that we don’t know how they were built. So, in my works, it’s usually a very big statue of a woman or giant heads with a futuristic astronaut somewhere in there to help give you a sense of the scale.
Please talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy.
No matter what type of day I’m having, it always re-aligns my spirit whenever I get to illustrate on my computer. It’s like nothing else matters; I’m my happiest in that moment. It’s very meditative, and I love it.
