Today we’d like to introduce you to Federico Alotto.
Hi Federico, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My path in the arts began early as I embarked on studying the trumpet, musical composition, and orchestral conducting at the age of 8 in Turin, Italy. In 2003 I completed my studies at Turin’s prestigious Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of the Arts and found myself immediately in-demand as a professional jazz and classical musician. I toured France, Spain, Holland, Germany, Slovenia, Israel, the USA, and of course Italy with my music.
In 2008 I began my self-taught film studies and it wasn’t long before I was working for brands like Ducati, Adidas, and Disney. In 2013 I wrote and directed my first short film “I See Monsters”. This short film received accolades and more than 33 awards as part of some of the most prestigious film festivals worldwide, including the Beverly Hills Film Festival and the Winter Film Awards. This opened the door to Hollywood. In 2016 I directed my first feature film “Ulysses: a Dark Odyssey” starring Danny Glover, Udo Kier-a master in the craft of acting who sadly we have just lost, Anamaria Marinca, and Skin (lead singer of the smash hit rock band Skunk Anansie). Myself and my business partners launched a busy and successful Turin-based film production company, which I still manage remotely today.
After a number of successful years in Europe following with feature films, such as “Code Karim”, a blockbuster first-run action flick, highly praised shorts, and tv series, I moved my family to the USA to take forward the requests I had begun receiving from my network of contacts in LA and other US-based projects. We settled in Austin, which is close enough to LA for me to be an easy commute, and is also the childhood of home of my wife, and a magnificent, creative, lively, and artist-friendly community to be a part of.
My busy Austin-based production company, Gran Torino Productions LLC, handles requests that range from feature films, to tv series and pilots, advertising, corporate work, and private events.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A path in the arts is always challenging, and along the course of my life I have worked in the fields of music, film, tv, and more. This means I have never taken the easy road, always insisting on staying true to my heartfelt calling and specialized skills and talents. To then also take this journey abroad to a new country and start a brand new chapter in a new cultural realty and in a language not natively my own, was an incredible feat. But I am thrilled that the Austin market has welcomed and embraced my professional contribution, and is keeping my calendar very full.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I come from another culture artistically and so my creative approach to anything has a European sensibility. Also my background in music means my storytelling through the camera always has a certain sense of harmony, composition, beauty, and rhythm. This is relevant to everything I shoot, from feature films to corporate interviews, and makes my work distinctive.
What I’m most proud of is having built my company from the ground up in a brand-new and foreign market for me. It took courage to start over and rebuild from scratch what had taken years to establish as an industry leader in Europe.
What sets me apart is my insistence on perfection in everything I do, and never compromising on the absolute closest I can get to the ideal vision that myself or my partners have imagined.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My wife 🙂 who also happens to be my agent. She is a native Austinite and is the first person I bounce anything off of. We are really team.
