Daily Inspiration: Meet Josh Wyland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Wyland.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Jiu Jitsu Hub (JJH) based on my passion for Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling. This passion began when I was 8 years old and started wrestling. My passion for combat sports shifted more so to Jiu Jitsu after wrestling for 15 years, when I started to compete in Jiu Jitsu. I am a world-class Jiu Jitsu competitor and wrestler. I received my Brown Belt under Nicky Ryan one of the best coaches and competitors in modern jiu jitsu. Through out my years training I have trained under the highest-level instructors for both Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling, including world champions and Olympians within both sports. I now plan to pass along my knowledge and experience to those who have the same passion for Jiu Jitsu and Wrestling. I have competed on a world level, competing on some of the sport’s biggest stages and taking out high-level black belts and world champions across the world. But specifically with my gym Jiu Jitsu Hub I plan to bring a level of passion and professionalism that I think the culture of Jiu Jitsu is lacking heavily. The culture of Jiu Jitsu is very amateur in my opinion and can be way better. I plan to set that new bar with my new gym Jiu Jitsu Hub.

Here is a list of my achievements in Jiu Jitsu and in wrestling over my 18 years of competition experience

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road when you’re chasing success. I have ran into major obstacles throughout my years of competing in Jiu Jitsu and wrestling at a very high level. I’ve had multiple surgeries, some taking as long as 1 year to come back from. I have dropped out of college and moved across the country to purse my dreams of owing my own business one day and having my own brand within combat sports. I’ve had my own family telling me I will fail. It hasn’t been easy and I could go way more into detail about these obstacles, but the truth is no one cares. There’s no time to play victim and cry about how hard it’s been there’s only time for progress. But like most stories of success there’s always help along the way. I have many people to thank for their help along the way and friends who have helped me and they know who they are. I show nothing but gratitude toward people who help me. My grandpa has also been a massive supporter in my life and I owe him more than anything I could provide in this life. My parents sacrificed a lot in their life to allow me to purse opportunities in my early career and for that I’m always thankful that God gave me loving parents. But specifically my wife has been my biggest supporter a long this journey. She followed me across the country and has supported me throughout my whole competitive journey in Jiu Jitsu. We were not married during the time she followed me across the country but I proudly call her my wife now. I do not deserve the level of support and belief I’ve received from her, but I am always truly grateful and she will always reap the rewards of my success and labor before anyone else. Success is a hard path to take but you can’t be afraid of failure and take pride knowing you tried to be great when most are to afraid to try.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So I am an Instructor and owner of jiu jitsu Hub in Georgetown Tx. I specialize in No Gi jiu jitsu and wrestling. A lot of people know me for my exciting high level jiu jitsu and wrestling, specifically competing and being an instructor for B Team jiu jitsu one of the top gyms in the world. I think what I am most proud of hasn’t happened yet.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I want to make Jiu Jitsu more professional. I mean more professional for the hobbyist and members of gyms. I think the industry could continue to grow within the next 5-10 years for sure! But gym owners need to run way more professional businesses. I think right now a gym called AOJ in California is a great model I’m trying to base my gym off of. You don’t hear of jiu jitsu schools giving PTO to their instructors like a professional job, but we do at JJH. This is just one of many ways I want to be different and grow the industry. At my gym there always two instructors instead of one for more one on one attention for our members. So I think for specifically gym owners the level of effort and professionalism is going to have to grow in that direction and I think JJH will lead that charge as an example on how to be. The sport itself has recently been picked up and funded by the UFC, and I think is a good sign that jiu Jitsu is growing and becoming a popular hobby for people to try.
