Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Davis
Hi Julie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the art world seemed to come by chance and later than for most. After I moved to Austin in 2003, a friend introduced me to a local landscape artist at a Contemporary Austin event. Soon after, I began taking oil painting classes from her at the Laguna Gloria campus. I quickly realized that plein air painting brought all my skills and interests together in a way that excited and challenged me like nothing else had (my background was not in art–I have degrees in education and law and experience in freelance writing and photography).
Over the coming decade, I studied with some of the preeminent landscape painters in the country and began entering national juried shows. Currently, I am represented in galleries around the country, am a Signature member of three top national painting associations, have earned a variety of awards, judge plein air competitions, and teach painting courses in person and online.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Getting a late start and not having a fine arts degree used to feel like obstacles, but time, perseverance, and experience eventually eliminated those perceived hindrances. Hard work is still the great hack for most things in life and has served me incredibly well.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a landscape artist. Painting the landscape is pretty sacred to me. I’m not only invested in studying it, but being in it rejuvenates and inspires me in a way nothing else does.
All my work begins outdoors, or en plein air. I pack up my tripod, easel, oil paints, brushes, etc. in a backpack and drive or bike to a location where I’ll create studies, make sketches, and take notes. Back in my studio I’ll use all of that information to create pieces that I sell in the various galleries that represent me.
I’m probably most known for the peaceful quality of my paintings and for the way I handle trees within them. Trees have become such a muse for me and a sought after subject for collectors that I now teach a course about painting trees in the landscape. It’s rewarding to be able to share what I love with others both through the paintings and through teaching,
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
The galleries where you can find my work are Davis Gallery in Austin, Mockingbird Gallery in Bend, Oregon, and Mary Williams Fine Arts in Boulder, Colorado.
