Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaila Macmillan
Hi Kaila, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always had a passion for photography. 14 years ago my parents bought me a camera and I was hooked!! I started with all the family and friends around me. In the last 3 years I’ve really pushed to grow my business and show off my creative skills, I really love having an outlet for my creativity! What really pushed me even more is having my kids. I loved going to get all of the milestone photo shoots done of my kids. I loved getting family pictures done every year so I talked my husband into taking a leap of faith on me and buying me a really nice camera. Thinking he was going to save money on family pictures he agreed! I’m a Go Big or go home kinda of girl, I got the best camera/lens I knew to get! I jumped on YouTube and Instagram and began learning how to use my new fancy camera. I became a self-taught photographer and practiced and practiced and practiced! That’s a wonderful thing about photography too. There is an art form about it. There’s always learning and something new. There’s always ways to improve yourself not only to show off your clients and their look their style and to show off your skills as an artist. I strive to constantly do better and be better!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel like my photography was meant to be and I’ve been very blessed, with the success of my business! That being said I’ve had my slow seasons for sure but been able to have made up for it in busy season. Being a stay at home wife/mom and a homeschool mom at that, my business comes second to being a wife and raising my kids. That comes with trying to find balancing between not letting my business overtake my priority, which is my family. Which can be daunting at times I’m Blessed enough to have a very supportive husband and family to help me!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a lifestyle photographer. I specialize in natural light photography. I do a variation of different types of shoots. From family, kids, branding, styled shoots, headshots, engagement, weddings, maternity and newborn! I’m also a horse girl myself so I specialize a lot in other horse people’s family pictures. Weather it be the whole family in the pasture with their horses, brand new baby, or even a graduation shoot with all of their rodeo horses. I know how to make a horse look good and the right angles. I love a good pasture picture to show off the western lifestyle. I’m passionate about making my clients look their best and filling their best. I want them to love these pictures as much as I do!
What does success mean to you?
I think success is getting to do something you love and still get excited about getting to do it! Waking up and still be motivated to go do what you love. I’m blessed enough to have the luxury of pursuing my passion and being successful with it! Definitely doesn’t hurt that I get to make money with what I’m good at.
