Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Stuart.
Laura, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have a long history and love for children. I was a nanny for several years. One family I supported had a six year old little girl who wanted to learn how to make jewelry over her summer vacation. As a supportive caregiver, I joined her in a class. This was over 15 years ago. As a nanny of newborns and toddlers, I rarely wore jewelry. So, I wanted to make jewelry that was kid friendly. Nontoxic, durable and sustainable jewelry became my focus. I am also a lover of nature and travel. I used to live near the beach in Los Angeles and found inspiration on my walks and bike rides. Wherever I visit, I like to see how nature differs from my hometown of Austin. I like to take a piece of nature with me and cast it into jewelry. My entire cuff/bracelet collection comprises this. I cast in 100% recycled brass and plate them. Sustainability and ethical practices are extremely important to me. The entire process, from start to finish and what we wear needs to be as non-toxic and earth-friendly as possible. Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest challenges have been money and getting my jewelry in front of people. In order to make the jewelry, I need to invest in it. Then, once it’s made, I need to promote it. I am doing this all on my own, so it’s been a very slow process. There have been various educational challenges that come with being an entrepreneur. I’ve learned to market, social media, editing and a whole ton of communication skills. While these were challenges, they are skills that will stay with me for life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My brand is known for being sustainably and ethically made in the US for women by women. My answers to previous questions go into this more. To express a little further, I do not use sweatshops overseas. I am friends with my manufacturer, Silva. She and I have worked together for over ten years. We co-design and communicate on how to make more conscious jewelry. More on her, here: https://www.lauraelizabethjewelry.com/blogs/news/what-is-ethical-eco-friendly-jewelry
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
As an entrepreneur I’m making all of the decisions. So, it feels so much better having a team. I have a board, who I meet with monthly. They hold me accountable and offer business-related suggestions. I also have a mentor through Score, which I highly recommend. I’m on the board of the WJA (Women’s Jewelry Association) Austin Chapter. I have found the Austin Chapter to be extremely supportive. We support one another with sourcing as well as honest and helpful feedback.
