Lucy MacQueen

Hi Lucy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I arrived in Austin after years of traveling and have lived in Austin for the last 30 years. I have always been passionate about my work, and for the previous 12 years, I have been able to focus on it entirely. After moving from one studio space to another, I managed to land at Canopy, which has been incredible for local exposure and is a fantastic working community. I have shown in Austin, Dallas, New York, Santa Fe, and my hometown of London. Being a successful artist requires growth and determination. Fortunately, I am stubborn and love what I do.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a career as an artist is a rough road as it’s so hard not to take rejection personally, not to mention it can be challenging to make a living at it. All artists go through this at some point, and I am no exception. The last few years have been great, though, and I hope that this trajectory continues.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a landscape artist and paint with acrylics. To me, each blank canvas is an opportunity, a precipice that I must hurl myself off. Step one is to create my harness by taking a thick piece of charcoal and writing a message to myself about what I want this piece to evoke. Sometimes, it is a sentence or two from a poem or book; sometimes, it is just something personal. This technique gives me structure and shines a light through the snow blindness of the bare white panel, allowing me to focus on the meaning of this particular piece and how to share my vision.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Each change of style is a risk, yet to stay safe is to stagnate, and we artists can’t take that risk either.
