Today we’d like to introduce you to Megen Mundy
Hi Megen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got interested in herbal medicine in my late 20’s, and after spending years unhappy working a 9-5 job, I decided to go back to school to learn more about it, and find my way into the community. The shop I own now was a favorite haunt of mine on the journey, and I got a job working here after my studies to begin integrating plant medicine into my life. So it’s a very full circle moment for me to now be at the helm of such a special place.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The last 3 years of ownership have been such a wild ride. There was a big learning curve for me. I had never owned a business before, let alone a brick and mortar in an expensive city like Austin. Everything from managing the employees, scaling for expansion and coming up with new products has been a trial by fire for me in a lot of ways. But I’m so grateful for it, and all the lessons that come with it. I feel like I’m slowly learning to trust myself, and accept the fact that there will always be something to do around here, and that’s ok. It’s certainly never a dull moment at the Herb Bar!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are Austin’s oldest apothecary and metaphysical shop, and we’ve been serving the community since 1986. We’ve always been women-owned, and community driven, and our mission is to create a safe and inclusive space for people to learn about holistic healing, and empower themselves to take charge of their health.
We offer everything from house made teas and body care products, supplements and tinctures from local herbalists, books, crystals, tarot decks and more. We also host a wide variety of events and workshops as well as local vendor markets. We take a lot of pride in being one of Austin’s legacy businesses, and many of our customers have been with us from the very beginning.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I would say just put yourself out there! I am a notorious introvert and homebody, but I quickly realized that wasn’t going to do me any good. Meeting other business owners in the community has been a tremendous help for me-I always get a lot of support and inspiration. I try to frequent other small businesses and introduce myself, or I go to herbal events around town. I also really love collaboration! It really works great for cross promotion, and I love doing what I can to support other small businesses.
And ALWAYS carry your business cards with you! You never know who you’ll run into.
