Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Thaxton.
Hi Melissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Mila & Me started during the height of COVID, when I was a new mom looking for a creative outlet that brought comfort and joy during uncertain times. I began hand-dyeing pieces in my kitchen, creating garments that felt uplifting and full of life. What started as a small project quickly grew into a brand built on family, resilience, and community.
Today, Mila & Me has evolved into a lifestyle brand centered around collaboration. I’ve partnered with amazing Austin institutions like P. Terry’s, Blenders and Bowls, Cisco’s, Amy’s Ice Creams, and Antone’s, as well as national influencers like Melissa Wood Tepperberg and Danielle Bernstein. Each collaboration stays true to the partner’s aesthetic while bringing the signature Mila & Me flare that people recognize and love.
At its core, Mila & Me is about celebrating confidence, creativity, and connection. It’s been a journey of turning something personal into something that continues to bring people together in meaningful, colorful ways.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most small business owners, I started Mila & Me with no roadmap—just a vision, a lot of heart, and a determination to make something meaningful out of a challenging time. Everything has been self-taught, from designing and sourcing materials to figuring out which vendors to trust and how to work with different fabrics. It’s been a lot of trial and error, and I’ve had to learn every part of the process myself, from building the website to managing shipping and all the tiny details in between.
Because you have to strike while the iron’s hot, it often means long days and late nights, but I truly love what I do. I’m so grateful for everyone I’ve gotten to know and collaborate with along the way, and for all the opportunities that have helped me grow. The best part is sharing it with my daughter and being part of a community that has supported us from the beginning. Mila & Me has always been about connection, and I feel lucky to be creating something that brings people together.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Mila & Me is all about creating pieces that make people feel joyful, comfortable, and connected. Every item is hand-dyed with care, blending elevated design with a playful, approachable style that fits right into everyday life. I specialize in collaborations with local businesses, institutions, and brands – bringing their aesthetic to life through custom designs that reflect who they are while adding that signature Mila & Me flare.
What I’m most proud of is how much heart goes into everything we do. From partnerships with Austin favorites like P. Terry’s, Cisco’s, Blenders and Bowls, and Antone’s, to national influencer collaborations, every project is built around creativity and community.
What sets Mila & Me apart is that it’s deeply personal. I’m hands-on in every step of the process – from dyeing and designing to planning events and connecting with customers. It’s not just about the clothes; it’s about creating moments that make people feel seen and celebrated. And being able to share that experience with my daughter and our Austin community makes it all the more special.
Any big plans?
Looking ahead, I really want to continue expanding our collaborations and our team. Mila & Me has always thrived on creativity and connection, and I’m excited to keep partnering with brands to help them elevate their merchandise in ways that feel fresh and meaningful. I want to keep flexing our creative muscles and pushing boundaries in how we bring color, comfort, and storytelling into everything we do.
I’ve been reflecting a lot on balance and manifestation lately- leaning into the idea that when you lead with intention, the right opportunities unfold. The future for Mila & Me feels full of light and possibility, and I’m excited to keep using that energy to support causes we care about and strengthen our roots in the Austin community.
