Daily Inspiration: Meet Nickolas Grisham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nickolas Grisham.

Nickolas Grisham

Hi Nickolas, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Austin, as many do, to attend UT. I met my now wife, Morgan Bond, in the communications building — she was early to class on purpose, and I had misread the schedule. My first job out of school was editing advertisements at the largest agency in town, GSD&M. (Check out their SXSW party if you can!). There, I learned how commercials get made from start to finish, the immense number of good ideas slashed by clients, and how you can never spend enough on craft services. Morgan and I decided to follow our passion for directing by starting a commercial production house called CamLock Films. *Camlock is a beefy electrical cable you only find on the big film sets.* It started as just us: producing, directing, and editing every project. Now, we have a full-time team of 5 and a great network of diverse directors who can serve Austin and Dallas with high production value and polished commercial videos. We specialize in precise pre-production and creating animatics. Using a video game engine, we make a 3d mock-up of every shot before heading to set. This kind of service has traditionally been reserved for effects-heavy sequences. Still, we find them very useful for aligning groups of people to a vision before committing it to film. We are Woman-owned and offer turn-key video services.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The largest challenge in my career will likely be in the next 5 years as we all define how AI-generated art is utilized, paid for, and attributed.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Morgan Bond and Nickolas Grisham are co-directors of commercial & short-form videos at their production company, based in Austin, Texas. They met while studying film at the University of Texas at Austin and have been making movies together ever since. Morgan started her career as a gaffer and worked on the film “Thunder Road,” which won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW. Nick began as an editor at a national ad agency before starting his production company with Morgan. Together, they have directed and edited for renowned agencies like GSD&M, Havas, Plot Twist, and Integer. Their focus on food, family, and fun transitions has resulted in successful campaigns for clients like AMD, Travelocity, HEB, Grubhub, and many more. They have unique skills that allow them to accomplish more on set in one day than an individual could. Morgan leads the art department and production, while Nickolas engages with post-production and anything that requires deep thought, brooding in the corner and stroking his beard. With a passion for creating high-quality spots in the studio and on location, Morgan and Nick bring their expertise and creativity to every project they work on. They are artists who are fearless of spreadsheets, can make previous solid animatics and storyboards, and always ensure effective collaboration with their clients.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a theater kid, with all the energy and loudly sung show tunes that come with that. I loved making sketch comedy videos with my friends in high school and have been trying to create better and better videos with friends ever since.
