Today we’d like to introduce you to Obert Cantave ii.
Obert, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m OGTHAMANE of the SoundCloud hip hop scene. I started releasing music under the name Obear Tha Gc back in 2019 then slowly changed my name to OGTHAMANE to add a more catchy ring to it. (My initials is o.g.c and “Tha Mane” stands for dirty south slang). My father put me onto a lot of alt rock as a kid along with m.cs such as Busta Rhymes, OutKast, Cee lo Green, and wu tang klan while my mother always had me listen to gospel music. My big brother had put me onto zro, trae tha truth and slim thug whereas my sister always had the hottest 2000s/ early 2010s hip hop track playing on the television speakers which keep me up to date. Moving to Tampa Florida, I drifted more into the punk rock scene and constantly got clowned for being different. I was weird, liked anime, played trading card games, and wasn’t bumping that new drake or rich homie quan like everyone else was. Instead, I was listening to offspring rise against, rage against the machine, flobots, etc. I didn’t really pick up the pad for real until my junior year of high school after revisiting spaceghostpurrp’s raider klan and decided I wanted to show people that I did have talent after being told that I “had no talent” by some girl in one of my classes. By senior year fellow rappers such as the influential Orange Parrk, Connor Paycheck, and raffaello told me to get into the game so I did just that. By then, I had met my best friend D.Lee and we begun writing for our first ever track “G Punk” which also lead me to completing my first ever mixtape Tampa Punk which dropped April 13th of 2019. Instead of going to prom night, I went to my theater rehearsal for the Putnam county spelling be and dropped the whole tape under my manager/ close friend Sydney Defelix. It wasn’t until I moved back to Texas and into Austin that the growth for the tape started to get somewhere. Ever since then, I’ve been taking off with it.
I didn’t start making the underground hits until mid-2020 when my music begun taking a dark/ trill turn. I first dropped a two track ep called “The Game Don’t Want Me” that skyrocketed thanks to being introduced into the phonk community by Waco Rapper $krrt Cobain and the gatekeeper YouTube page “Memphis 66.6 radio”. I wanted to give the Austin underground a sound to be influenced by and this tape broke the glass for that. I then proceeded to drop my most popular two-track ep to this day, “Hollowing my$elf”. This tape most definitely broke the ice for me in the Austin underground and people started to recognize me for spitting my reality. The production by Hearse.t gave me the dark and nostalgic sound I wanted the Austin SoundCloud scene to be influenced by. I feel like one day the two tracks on that ep will reach the top of the Austin rap scene due to it being too real and well placed. I continued dropping hit tracks up until February of 2022 when I decided it’s time for me to take the OGTHAMANE brand and have it sit down on the music side while I boost the visual side farther. Right now, I’m sitting at being an influential figure in the phonk scene and I’m happy for where I’m at right now.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had plenty of struggles along the way. One thing SoundCloud artists learn is that a lot of rappers are either weird or shady. I’ve been used plenty of times for another artist’s gain so much to where it got to the point where I only really mess with a select few. Another thing is these egos a lot of artists have when they realize he/she is bigger than you in numbers. They usually come back and hit you up the moment you do something big in the scene just so they can gain from you. I do have a lot of behind the scenes that goes on but of course, that’s in my lyrics for people to listen to
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a SoundCloud rapper. II usually use a lot of nostalgic dark sounds to get a point across or have people vibe out to.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Not only is the city beautiful but I really appreciate the amount of love I get in Austin. People there are so supportive of the sound that I can pretty much tell anyone I make music and they will for sure be interested in my sound. I really love that fact that the chill atmosphere tends to make me incorporate that into my sound. The one that I don’t really mess with about Austin is the drivers of course. We all know how they get.
