Daily Inspiration: Meet Pato Gomez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pato Gomez

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Monterrey, Mexico and I moved to Austin at 10 years old. With a passion for soccer, I was able to play D1 at Gonzaga University, but I was unable to play my sophomore year due to medical issues; that’s when I became an artist. I started painting shoes, clothes and canvases, so I founded my brand W.E.Y (What Excites You). I made multiple paintings during my time in college, and was able to showcase in galleries in NYC, LA, Spokane and Austin. I decided to study fashion design at ACC, and I graduated in December of 2023. Since then, I have showcased my clothes on runways in Austin and San Antonio and I have styled professional athletes and musicians. I’m still learning, but you can see my work at wearwey.com

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, I have had to learn many new skills, faced rejection and had to work without being paid. I decided on my new path of art and fashion at 21 years old and I still struggle with the feeling of “starting late”.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create abstract and surrealist paintings, custom shoes, multi-disciplinary shows, graphic design and couture fashion design. I am known for my unique paintings style which consists of an abstract pattern that can applied to canvases, clothes, murals, portraits, etc. Some call it the “Pato Pattern”. My focus on details has allowed me to grow as an artist without formal art education, and what sets me apart is the conjunction of my artistic, design and entrepreneurial skills under the umbrella of my brand W.E.Y

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned is patience. Even though I haven’t reached the heights of showcasing art at the MOMA or showing my clothes at Paris Fashion Week, which are my long-term goals, I still have plenty of time to get there.
