Daily Inspiration: Meet Riley Skinner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Riley Skinner.

Hi Riley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Building has always been a passion of mine and have worked in construction since I was young. I got my bachelors in construction management and found great value in it. I worked for a home builder and built homes for them. Even though these homes were well built, I constantly found myself wanting to do things differently, change the process, or elevate quality. I decided to start my own company where these factors could be controlled. For this reason, Ridge Rock Builders has excellent customer service, efficient communication, and outstanding quality.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My story is much like everyone else. Starting a company is hard. You don’t know where or when your next job will be. Getting your name out there is hard. But what has taken most of our energy has been finding the proper sub contractors. When I started I had very few contacts for sub contractors. Knowing I wanted a culture and quality that was above the rest, I was extremely careful who we chose to work with. Everyone that is hired as sub contractors is throughly vetted and multiple interviews take place. This has allowed us to bring like minded people onto the team and meet the high expectations that we have.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One of the things I love most about building custom homes is the personal experience that comes with it. When customers come to me, they aren’t just looking for a structure to be built. They’re creating a forever home, a dream home, or sometimes even their very first home. It’s a place for family. For some, it’s where they’ll start their family; for others, it’s a place their family will always return to. Being a part of that is a privilege. It’s hard to put into words how rewarding it is to deliver projects like these. Celebrating those milestones with our customers is one of the most enjoyable parts of what we do.

Too many home builders avoid the emotional side of home building, but I see that connection as essential. I highly value the conversations on the job site — even when we’re just shooting the breeze and not talking about the work at all. Those moments allow customers to see how real we are. We truly care, and our only goal is to deliver a home that fits them personally while meeting the level of quality we promise. That approach allows trust to flourish. Communication naturally improves when you truly understand who you’re communicating with.

When you take the time to get to know a customer, you begin to understand what matters most to them and how they plan to live in their home. That opens the door to what I call “low-hanging fruit” — simple, often inexpensive opportunities to go above and beyond. It might be adding extra backing for hunting trophies or installing a grab bar in a shower for a grandparent who visits often. Small details like these make a big difference, and they turn a house into a home that genuinely serves the people who live there.

What makes you happy?
At its core, I simply love building. I enjoy the entire process, from the earliest planning stages to the final walk-through, and I’m fascinated by the science behind how a home truly works. Understanding structural systems, building envelopes, energy efficiency, and how materials interact over time allows me to build smarter, stronger, and more durable homes. There’s something deeply rewarding about taking raw materials and turning them into something permanent and meaningful through hard work and craftsmanship. Each project presents new challenges that require problem-solving, attention to detail, and adaptability, and that keeps me engaged every day. I’m constantly learning — whether it’s new construction techniques, better materials, or more efficient ways to build — because improvement is part of the responsibility I feel as a builder. That passion for learning and for the work itself is what drives the quality of every home we deliver.
