Daily Inspiration: Meet Tyeschea West

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyeschea West.

Hi Tyeschea, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Since I was young, I have loved drawing and taking photos, so receiving my college degree in graphic design seemed like the best way to make a living as an artist. After being laid off three different times at the start of my career, I decided to pursue a life as an artist on my own terms. My sister, a real estate agent, recommended I look into real estate photography. And from then on, I specialized in interior design photography, specifically working with interior designers and capturing their work for their portfolios. When I am not shooting photography, I create fine art photography, mixed-media pieces, and, most recently, sculptural work for art exhibitions.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I first started this unpaved journey to become the first successful artist in my family, I bought into the “starving artist” identity many assume is inevitable. I struggled to pay bills, buy gas, and buy groceries for a time. But then I realized that I don’t have to believe this assumed narrative, and I can be as successful as I want to be in this life. It’s up to me, my belief in myself, and my discipline. After this mindset shift, opportunities, growth, and abundance began to show up in beautiful, unexpected ways.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My artwork uses a mix of media, focusing on colorful portraiture. In the past, I have created fine art photography portraits, some of which are overlaid with watercolor, acrylic, and film. Other pieces are ink, watercolor, acrylic, and film on paper. Last year, I added sculpture to my repertoire, and I am working on my next art show, scheduled for 2026. What sets me apart is my love of exploring different mediums to express the beauty of innate humanity, primarily through portraiture.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Living in Belgium and traveling throughout Europe were pivotal parts of my childhood. It opened my eyes to a larger world and created the love of travel within me. It also gave me the desire to remain curious and stay appreciative of my surroundings, wherever I may be.
