Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Cobbs.
Hi Victoria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My passion for all things beauty began in college. That’s where my skills as a makeup artist developed and I was given the opportunity to be part of photoshoots, events and personal projects for my friends. When I graduated college in 2017, I was in social work full time and spent nearly three years in the foster care and adoption world. The beauty industry was always in the back of my mind, yet at the time I felt it was unattainable given I just invested four years for a degree in a completely different field. Eventually, I realized that my future in social work was limited and I was no longer happy in that role. I took a leap of faith quitting that job and jumping headfirst into a new career; it worked! I’m currently in school part-time working towards an esthetician license. When I’m not at work, I’m sharpening my skills for freelance work as a makeup artist.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has not been the easiest. The biggest struggle was finding the correct path while learning to let go of the future I had imagined for myself. Through college, I was so sure of myself and what I wanted to do with my life. I had it all planned out! It wasn’t until I made the decision to drop out of graduate school in 2018 that I realized how unhappy I was with the path I had built for myself. Looking back, I see how everything I learned and experienced is simply now a tool that I can take with me onto the next adventure. I have no regrets, I know that everything played out exactly how it was supposed to.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Currently, I am a student at Avenue Five Institute located in South Austin. While I’m furthering my education, I’m able to accept clients on campus under supervision of instructors who are licensed estheticians. I currently offer facials, brow tint, last tint and lift, microdermabrasion, full-body waxing and facial waxing. Outside of that scope, I am also a freelance makeup artist specializing in prom makeup and other special events. My philosophy is that skincare sets the tone and makeup completes the look. I’m proud of the fact that I can offer both skincare and makeup services, advice and personalized routines for each client.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’m not naturally a risk-taker, but I’ve taken a huge leap of faith getting into the beauty industry considering my degree is in the health and human services field. It took a long time and a lot of effort to get here. Between therapy sessions and chats with my loved ones, it took me a while to get the courage to step out of what I know and move towards a totally different future. Sometimes I wish I would’ve taken this path straight out of high school, but again everything played out exactly how it was supposed to.
