Today we’d like to introduce you to Who’s On Call. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Who’s On Call Podcast started with an invite to Rick’s house to have a jam session. Alvaro on guitar, Rich on bass, and Rick on drums. The music was crap but the conversations were the spark of a two years run. With a weekly Monday morning release (6a.m.) we hope to start our listeners on a positive humorous start to the grind that is Multifamily Maintenance. We all have worked as maintenance for luxury and student housing apartments and boy do we have stories! Our stories and experiences is the base of our podcast. But we add humor to these stories and learned to laugh at our failures while gaining knowledge on and off the clock. Who’s On Call is a question to cringe at in our industry. Yes, it means time and a half pay but it also takes away time from family, friends, and any peace of mind a human needs to have for a healthy existence. We feel humor is the great equalizer. Everyone loves a good laugh. We enjoy each other’s company on and off the mic. Rick and Alvaro worked together years ago in Round Rock. Both very much a part of the Austin art world. Rick playing with the Austin Latino Rock band Este Vato.
And Alvaro a local Austin-based graffiti artist. With their love for the arts and creativity they forged a bond and friendship that has lasted over ten years. Rick also worked with Rich at a number of properties around the Austin area. The art of laughter was their bond. Making the best of any situation, they would take turns cracking jokes at and to each other. That’s where we take our podcast to. We don’t take ourselves seriously. We try to find the funny in everything we do. This industry is not ideal for free thinkers and political incorrectness. So we created this podcast to vent our weekly frustrations in hopes to connect with other maintenance techs around the U.S. and possibly the world. Rick’s quote is “Same shit different toilet.” We feel a connection with other maintenance techs and hope if they listen to us, they will feel that connection too. And hopefully in some way, we make them laugh and they find a way to make themselves laugh just to continue to live that paycheck to paycheck life that is Multifamily Maintenance.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
With any podcast your major challenge is what’s it about? Cars? Sports? How to? We feel we have an audience out there for us, it’s just a matter of them finding us. We are on social media. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Too old for Tic-toc. Word of mouth is what we have been relying on so far. Slow and steady we are building our WOC Mafia. What the end result will be is up in the air. We just love getting together and complaining to each other our current struggles. All the while being made fun of by the other two guys. Unfortunately, we have suffered from telling stories of places we have worked. Alvaro was fired from an apt complex for complaining about management and how it could have been run better. Also, the guest we had on was threatened to lose their contract just for being affiliated with us. We try to keep the anonymity of places and people we bring up. For their protection and also a way for us to hopefully dodge today’s cancel culture.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our body of work is filled with memes, vulgar language, and making each other laugh. We also go live on Facebook Tuesday nights. We will show pictures and videos of our weeks service ticket encounters. While answering questions from our viewers in the chat. Ricks wife Ana steps in as executive producer and manages the chat and video feed. And contributes to the show when there is no guest. We would like to reach out to anyone who is in the Austin area connected with the Multifamily Industry. Whether in the office, construction or in the crap with us, we would love to hear your story. Everyone in this industry has a story and we would love to hear it!
