Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Cuajao (Kwa-how).
Hi Ali, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I come from an artistic family, my mom is a painter and my dad had an aromatherapy company where I would help make soap and herbal products that we sold at farmer’s markets. I think this is what began my interest in skincare and makeup. I started my career as an esthetician in Sonoma, CA and eventually moved to New York City to further my career as a makeup artist. Once I moved to Austin, I started having an interest in permanent makeup. I took some courses with Kenzie Perez at Fresh Cosmetic Studio and now am a part of the team! I love her aesthetic and how supportive the environment is. I am able to work alongside talented women in the same profession as me and we get to bounce methods and ideas off each other. I’m excited to be offering a new service at Fresh, mini facials! I will always offer skincare in some form regardless of how successful I become in permanent makeup. In the future, I would love to take my skill with me while visiting new places as a guest artist at different studios.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always going to be challenges being your own boss. When starting out, you just have to remember that it will take twice as long and cost twice as much as you expect. I have learned to let the bad days become a lesson of trial and error and move on. I focus on what is working for me, stay positive and reflect on the growth I have made so far. The bumps in the road are part of the experience.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an esthetician first and foremost. I love talking about skin and creating customized treatment plans and have been doing it for years! What I am becoming known for is microblading and soon to be lip blushing. I love mixing colors and the artistic outlet it gives me. I strive to create a caring and relaxing environment for my clients. One of the reasons why I love what I do is the immediate transformation aspect. Before and after photos are so visually satisfying. The other and most important reason is that I get to have these super special one-on-one connections with my clients. I feel lucky to have the experience of meeting people from all different backgrounds while giving them something to feel good about.
How do you define success?
Success is about living to your potential and not being afraid of failure. I believe that if you do your best at something it will allow opportunities in.
