Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Max.
Angie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
umma juice started at home. Our family started making juice for our son during those stretches when he’d come home from school and it felt like everyone in the house was catching the same bug. On top of work and life, we were just trying to keep up. We had the usual options to keep him hydrated, but I wanted something that felt more supportive, like it was actually helping him refill what he’d lost.
I have a background in maternal and child health, so I’m always thinking about what’s realistic for families. It has to be easy, it has to taste good, and it has to feel like it’s doing something. I started sharing what we were making with friends, especially other parents, and I kept hearing the same thing. They wanted better options, but they didn’t want something complicated or something their kids wouldn’t touch.
So I decided to build umma juice and give juice an upgrade.
My Korean heritage is a big part of it too. A lot of the fruits and flavors I gravitate toward are the ones I grew up with, and they’ve always felt connected to comfort and care. The name “umma” really says it all, which is mom in Korean.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing it all. Building a brand takes a lot, and I’m also trying to be present for my family while pursuing this dream of bringing more nourishment and care into other homes. I don’t think that tension disappears, but the silver lining is that I’ve been able to bring my son into parts of the journey. He gets to see the behind-the-scenes, help in small ways, and we’re learning together.
The other big struggle has been the learning curve. I came into a completely new industry, and there’s so much you don’t know until you’re in it. I’ve had to learn how the business really works, who to talk to, how to build the right partnerships, and even the right cadence for following up. It’s taught me that relationships are everything, and momentum often comes from consistency more than speed.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about umma juice?
umma juice is a Korean-inspired juice brand built for kids and good for the whole family. We make juice that tastes like a treat, but is built with “feel-good” function in mind so it can actually earn a spot in your everyday routine.
What we do / what we’re known for
Juice, upgraded: no added sugar, prebiotic fiber, vitamin blends (C, D, E, and more) that provide immunity, hydration, and daily support.
Built around real-life moments: we organize our lineup around Hydration, Daily, and Immunity support, so families can grab what fits the day.
Bold, family-approved flavors with a Korean point of view: “umma” (엄마) means mom in Korean, and the brand is rooted in that kind of intentional care.
What sets us apart
Function + flavor together. We focus on making something families actually want to drink, while still being thoughtful about what’s inside.
Ingredients with purpose. For example, Subak Splash (subak = watermelon in Korean) is a watermelon-based sip with electrolytes, magnesium, prebiotic fiber, and vitamins C & D plus calcium.
Glass, on purpose. We bottle in clear glass because we’re proud of what’s inside and want you to literally see the real whole fruit purees we use.
What I’m most proud of (brand-wise)
I’m proud that umma juice is deeply personal and still super practical. It’s inspired by the quiet care I grew up with, shaped by my maternal and child health background, and made to nourish families on sick days, play days, and everything in between. It’s also a tribute to all the good ummas who wrap their families and communities with love and care.
What I want readers to know
If you’re a parent or someone who is on-the-go, umma juice is meant to make the “better choice” feel easy and fun. Stock it for mornings, snack time, post-practice, and sniffle season. It’s simple, comforting, and intentionally made.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best about Austin is how easy it is to build a good life here. I’m from the East Coast, I’ve lived on the West Coast, and Austin is where we’ve really found our home. We get to raise our son here, spend a ton of time outside, and it never gets old finding our own version of a “beach day” at Emma Long. The food scene is genuinely amazing, and the arts and music culture is everywhere in a way that feels fun and accessible, not just “for special occasions.” It’s also super family-friendly, and we’ve found a really supportive community of neighbors and friends. And not to mention, a place my friends and families back home are happy to visit!
